Pro II video noise

Hi All,

I'm now mostly shooting HD and using a down-converted NTSC signal on my monitor.

I recently encountered the problem of visible video noise on my Blackbird/TB-6 monitor.

This is possibly generated by the Canatrans, since I don't have that problem, when the Canatrans is turned off or when I feed the video signal directly to the monitor. They are obviously sharing the video and power lines in the PRO II.

Is there a way of reducing that noise? Is anybody else having that problem?

Hi,

Video noise on the monitor is typically caused by the video tap/monitor being powered

by, or connected in common with, the camera battery. This noise can be eliminated by

using the three-battery configuration with 24-volt cameras; when using a 12-volt camera

with either two-battery configuration - plug the camera power cable into the Aux jack

which enables the Camera/Monitor battery to be used exclusively for the monitor/video

tap.

sorry, but that's not the cause. It's the canatrans for sure.

If you don't have a video DA any additional draw on the video signal, including recorders and the Canatrans, will weaken it. I also found (before adding a DA to my PRO II) that the stronger my Canatrans was set to, the more interference I saw. One of the added bonuses to a DA is that it prevents video signal and noise from traveling the wrong way in the video line. On a PRO II all video ports are INPUTS/OUTPUTS unless you have a DA installed.

Hope this helps

I have several questions;

1) Iain where on the sled did you put your DA? Which DA did you buy and who did the wiring? Do you have pictures?

2) Jens did you try using a Modulus on the rig instead? Or your Canatrans on a lower setting? My Blackbird is susceptible to RF (walkie interference) at times and I suspect that it is either the shielding of the cable going to the monitor from the rig, or the shielding in the monitor itself. I own an IMP Blackbird, not the MK-V version. So I wonder if yours is having a similar issue?

It's covered here

I used exactly the same DA and I did the wiring myself.

I own the same IMP Blackbird and never had a RF interference issue, sorry.

I also think that we are now much more sensitive when it comes to video quality since we are using HD video feeds. 2 years ago we were working with a crappy video assists and we didn't even think about video noise......

Jens,

I know this will sound strange but iPhone's and specifically the 3G version of the iPhone causes some major issues with my signal if it gets to close to my bottom electronics case. Not just the NTSC signal either, it messes up the HDSDI as well. Is it possible that the problem is caused an iPhone being to close? Do you have one on you when your working sometimes? Test that theory. When you test it make the phone do a Data Search for email or send a text...that is when it causes the most grief for me. I no longer allow any assistants to have them around when im flying the rig. Yes that makes me a bit less popular but life goes on. It is worth not having the headache of tracking down gremlins.

I have never had any issues with my CanaTrans and I have had it for a long time. I think mine is SN # 43. The only time I would ever expect the CanaTrans to cause any issues is if your power and gain are cranked up. Is your pwer over 1/2 w? Typically things begin to go bad over 1/2 watt unless your outdoors. Less is more with that tool most of the time as far as pwr goes. Now on the opposite end I have had lots of interference with my Modulus over the years.

Good luck!

Hi Steve, thanks for your input. Never had a problem with the Iphone so far.

Terry West is installing a video DA in my lower junction box/battery module this weekend.

I'm sure this will improve things.

Will keep everybody posted about that.
