Ultra 2 vest pad mod

Chatted today with Peter Abraham about the U2 vest and he mentioned a few of you guys had modded your vest by using thinner pads. That's the only thing I'm not particular about is the thickness. Sometimes I feel like I'm on the boom squad. I would like to explore the options of materials. Has anyone had such luck on the perfect bed to lay down it?

Alfeo,

good new post!

This is the exact issue I've had with my U2 vest. The pads are too thick, especially the shoulder ones...

Tiffen told me a few times that you can change the pads but never really got a clear answer on where to get thinner pads from...

So, joining Alfeo's request, any of you guys out there have some info on where to get different pads?

Thanks,

Jerry

Inside the pads are two layers of "that" material so you can always take out one , and get one half thinner pads. I've tried that but it did not work for me. Also tried changing them for a material similar to neoprene but it "disintegrated" very quick. So I stick with original.

Mine is a once piece which is two layers glued very well.

what did you find as a results... more fatigue in the shoulders or just general discomfort?

Peter warned me about the neoprene.

Fatigue was not the problem as stiffness of the vest. That white material is very stiff. That was not neoprene what I putted in side but something like it which does not have memory effect. On places of hard contact with the body it became very thin. I would try some quality foam. I've used another vest in the past which had foam and it was ok.

I haven't changed my pads, but you can buy many different foams from www.canalrubber.com. if you are in NY you can stop by and pick your possion. If not call them, they will sell you hte right stuff. I bought a few different foams to restore the seats on a couple antique chairs my wife loves. They have the same foam in out vests in many thicknesses. Hope that helps.

After trying different things and changing the pads inside the vest, I came to the conclusion that the shoulder pads are just too wide. If you look at the pro vest and even the wk for that matter, the shoulder straps are much more narrow in design. More like a regular backpack I'd say. And I think that's what makes the ultra vest so uncomfortable at times...

So in my opinion the pads are not that thick after all, they're just too much in size.

Anyways, just my 2 cts.

Remember we are all different shapes and sizes. One vest cannot fit all, so just do what it takes to make it fit. If the shoulder pads are to wide for your shoulders/neck, I suggest you take the original out and replace with foam that you cut to fit. Cut very little - 1/2 inch or less - and try, cut and try. Then when you are sure cut the original.

Also as a general recommendation have a colleague or a workshop instructor look at your way of wearing and fitting your vest. Sometimes we develop bad habits without knowing about it. Sometimes adjusting within the limits of the velcro is all it takes.
