In terms of the 1st & 2nd Gen iPhones, you will only loose visual voicemail. Not sure on what will work with the 3G nor 3Gs. It's very easy these days... I've been jailbreaking mine since the 1st Gen and that was when it required a bit more finesse. T-Mobile has a "unsupported device" tier 3 tech support team that will help you with settings for the network also.

Biggest thing is having to pay full price or more for the device it's self. Now Apple won't even sell you an iPhone without a contract, even at full price. But if you have a good friend on AT&T that wouldn't mind saying they lost their's and replace it with a 2year re-up, then your golden.

Not sure about the following:

Navigation (Maps works great on my 16G 2nd Gen btw)

MMS (just recently activated by AT&T)

But do your research here: http://modmyi.com/

this is the site that made it all happen for me.

Hey Ramon, "no-contract" iPhones are in high demand. I sold my used 3G on eBay a few weeks ago for $360 and it had a small ding on the corner and a hairline scratch on the glass. The unlocked versions are going for $700+.

Unless you absolutely hate ATT, and some people do, or ATT does not serve your area you might be better off buying out of your existing contract. With a new iPhone you get an outstanding warranty and support program, plus you can add Apple Care if you want.

As far as ATT goes, I've had great service and coverage from them; they even redirected an antenna to cover a dead zone near my home. With an iPhone from them you go to a special customer service department not their regular CS.

Also, the first thing I recommend to new iPhone owners is to turn off the 3G network setting for your day to day voice and data. The coverage is much better on the EDGE system and the battery will last 2x longer at least. I just turn on 3G if I need faster data at the moment.

Whatever you do, you'll love the phone! Ask Rob Vuona if he'd give up his iPhone now for the old phone he used to covet so dearly

Good luck!

I think the iPhone is such a valuable tool for all of us. The sheer number of apps on there that are relevant to our industry is fantastic. I love the navigation tools and the various ways of localising you to your surroundings. And email and internet on the go is a must-have these days.

I'd hate to be without it now!

You should take a look at this app, I use it very frequently and I think Apple should just include it with the iPhone:

If you aren't scared of doing a little hacking then unlocking an iphone is realtively straightforward. The only catch is that apple and the people who have been hacking it play a cat and mouse game so the hack allowing you to use the iphone on other networks doesn't always work with the most recent version of the iphone software. Once you have your phone hacked this isn't a problem as long as you don't ever use itunes to try to update your phone software (it will ask you and you have to make sure to say no). When buying a phone you need to make sure that the version it is running is currently hackable. http://blog.iphone-dev.org is where you can find the tools and find out if they work on the most recent version.
