Shoes for the beach

I wanted to ask what shoes people wear on the beach... I chain linked fence is great for walking on the beach... Also any other beach tips?

Have you tried these shoes on? I often find that these full on out door shoes have very stiff soles and I like soles with a lot of flex like trainers so I can roll along the ground. I am interested in these as they could be the elixir of shoes we have all been looking for.

 

Beach, for me is about protecting your ankle and being less concerned about sole roll. I wear HiTech Magnums. I like the idea of chain link fence but I reckon I would never use it unless it was super soft sand.

Hi Steve,

I use surf shoe or wet shoe. But most of the time I just go bare feet.

It is more comfortable and controllable on the sand than any kind of shoe.

Chain-link fence? No; unless you walk on very soft sand or sand dune.

I used the rubber-like material net on sand dune. It is a soil backing net which you can find in any gardening store (mine is from Home Depot). Cheap, light weight, and disposable!

On the beach, you might need at least 2 wind-cutter panels.

Water proof your lower electronic housing if you go near the wave.

Sunscreen, 4x4 double nets or Gyros. Don't worry about the shoes.

I have a pair of Bates Desert assault boots. They are great for cool weather and nights. They are light and nimble for a boot, more like a high top sneaker/hiker. Other than that, I do bare foot, or Keen Sandle with light socks, so my sole's can breath.

in sand i find my old combat boots to be the best, lots of ankle support especially in dunes. near water, barefoot or scuba booties

It´s a very hard test for your body.

Walking on the sand ...hurts.

I´ve a trick.... The way I´ll do, I put towels buried in the sand... small milimetters of sand covers it. Invisible for the camera in my way. It´s a harder surface , and you´ll don´t sink your feet in the sand... Barefree is other solution, not for me, because I prefer the air protection of my shoes...

On a job this summer that was planned to be mostly shots on trails, the director added several beach shots. This was a great lesson in the treachery of mesh trimmed running shoes. Brooks running shoes are great, I've been running in them for years. I wear a motion control stability model. The mesh keeps my feet cool on long summer runs. The mesh that lets the shoe breath also allows them to inhale an amazing amount of sand that seems to collect in the toe box. In a very short amount of time each shoe collected about a half cup of sand.

 

Lesson learned. Desert boots next time.

I am glad I found this post, as I was called yesterday for a shoot on Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. It will be my first beach shoot. I want to prep my rig as best as I can. In any other ways, what precautions have you and your AC teams protected the rig and your camera?

I have a standby cover in case of weather change. I was thinking to cover the camera, my batteries and everything on the monitor except screen with some expert garbage bag configuration, and possibly purchasing the arm covers that Evrim mentions in this post.

Is there anything else on the camera/steadicam that you feel should be protected? Is there possibility of vest issues? What would happen if sand got in the gimbal?
