Hi fellow ops,

I'm trying to build up my website (IWeb is simply great) and I need your advice to better cut and consider my showreel, there's some other stuff I can collect and some jobs in the future I can add but I would like to know your impression on this from a distant point of view. Don't be kind and critic as strong as possible, it's helpful.

Many thanks for the great help received, my operating is a direct consequence of this site and the knowledge available here.

Hey Matteo,

The rest of your reel could be phenomenal, but that opening shot will lose you the job every time. You just can't have a shot with that obvious a reflection in it. Cut either before or after that point.

The rest is not bad. I would try to cut out about 30 seconds. Get rid of some of the stuff that is repetitive. You'd have a much tighter reel.

Grazie Amedeo... troppo gentile  ... veramente apprezzati i tuoi complimenti

Thanks Afton,

I will cut it from after the reflection... the thing with this shot is that it's one of the first ever done and was something I ask the director to shoot... never been used in the editing but that car... well, it's sooooo beautiful...

I've a short film coming with the RED all shot in low mode (I'm going to be a dog POV) and can add some stuff from there too, there should come out some nice frames.

Buon lavoro. Amedeo

nice work, you seem to have some of the basics down already. here's my super critical review of your reel....

i agree, loose the reflection in the first shot. one suggestion might be to put a dislove over it (as if when you got the footage it was cut with another shot in the middle and you just cut it out).

next, when the artist gets to the mirror, get out of the shot quicker, dont linger on the still frame unless its perfect.

next, too many shots of the short bald black rapper. it looks like all you ever did was one rap video. take one or two shots max from each thing you work on. i realize this may be hard if your just starting to collect footage but it's better too short than overcrowded with shots from the same show.

next, im not crazy about your choice for the final shot. aside from the fact that its from that same video, it's not the best lateral shot.

finally (and i say this all the time), keep it short. i just re-edited my reel for the 7th time after 11 years of steadicam. it's about 3 and a half minutes and i really think it could probably be a minute shorter. your reel should be like a minute and 45 to 2 minutes tops until you have more footage from different shows. ive been privy to the viewing procedures of the dp and the director and while they are watching your reel they are on the phone, making notes, eating pizza and typing on their lap top. if they happen to look up at your reel you had better make sure it's got something good going on.

a good way to illustrate this point is to go on line and watch a few other operators reels. i can get through about 2 in a sitting and then im board silly. even with my friends reels i have to make my self stay focused if it's over about 2 minutes and thats a reel im actually interested in watching.

........ now take everything i say with a grain of salt. you asked to be critical and i was just giving you a hard look..........

hope that helps,

mm.

Thanks very much Amando... I'm working hard to reach the level I aim (actually I noticed that I need everyday practice otherwise my first day of shooting it's always weaker then the rest...) Soon I'll have the right to upload some more stuff (done with proper focus device) and show my 2010 showreel redux :)
