The Nimblecam has been getting a lot of use lately in ways I would never expect (i.e., who knew a couple of years ago that we'd be shooting full-frame 1080p with a 5 lb camera)? I will post pix shortly, someone was taking them that night. We certainly had no shortage of cameras around!

Here's the first still to emerge--poor man's low mode of course, and the awkward jerry-rig of the HDMI monitor to the rods at the base of my rig meant no way to move it to a nice viewing angle, let alone tilt it. Took me back to my Model 1 days. Hence my somewhat stooped and squished posture just to get a glimpse of the image--Chris Fawcett , no comments please!

I did use a 5 lb weight plate, but even still the sucker weighed basically nuthin'.

don't worry, they'll just mount the body to the 11 to 1 and we'll be right back up to 25 lbs!

Dang, I was just starting to think I'd never need to buy a big rig! |-)~

Off shortly to join Vincent on a job (see, sometimes those freebies pay off!) with the 1DMKIV. Moving beyond the HDMI annoyances by using a Blackmagic HDMI to HD-SDI converter, which thus allows use of the Camwave and "proper" monitoring via my spanking new Nebtek Solar7 SC monitor (before anyone gets too excited, the framelines and level firmware is not yet in place but Gaylen assures that they are getting there).

Picture below is from my prep with a 5D--1D is simply a little taller and bit heavier. Mostly I thought you guys would get a laugh out of the mounting method for the Camwave--old Hill Arri 3 bracket turned upside down, then festooned with a s**tload of dogbones and little rods to secure the Anton Bauer plate. For some reason the HD stuff seems to need to be mounted at 90 degrees a lot, so I've found the right angle rod clamps useful (I have Redrock and Zacuto). Can't say as this was a quick build, but it flies quite nicely for the minimal weight (maybe 25 lbs camera and sled combined) with a decent amount of inertia; I can't see a need to add another 10 lbs of steel to fly this on the big rig. It's quite delightful really.

One thing that we played with on the "Nocturne" shoot is a killer way to manage focus pulling while dealing with the minimal marks on still lenses: using the Preston HU3, we visually programmed the 6 reference marks (i.e. instead of dialing the lens to a marking, we taped out 2 feet and visually focused via the magnification feature), and the HU3 accurately interpolated the rest. Now instead of 7 or 8 hazy and probably innaccurate barrel markings we had a complete range of focus marks on the handset's ring, so the AC is now able to pull cine-style using all of their experience at judging distance, or off the monitor if preferred.
