I was on this site the other day and just breezed past the image looking for something else and even admired the simplicity of the hand unit, but didn't recognize it was on an iPhone. I wouldn't want to trust it to a touch screen that is capable of loosing the shot cause grandma wants to know when your gonna spot in and see your aunt. While the easy solution to that is to turn off the cellular network but keep the wifi on, something still tells me you'd get strange looks on set. The good news is that you've got countless transmitter backups on set, what with the DP's iPhone, and both AC's iPhones, and a couple of the grips' iPhones, and those PA's playing Scrabble on their iPhones, etc. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Also wondering what kind of delay is involved. Really cool tho'! Now if only we could downloaded the Preston HU3 database to our iPhones. You can "crack it open a line" if needed, you can also use it for zooms. The coolest feature is setting limits. You simply drag your fingers apart to limit the range until you only see the range that you want to use on screen, or expand the range by squeezing your fingers together. In portrait mode you get your choice of what camera to control and when in landscape you get 3 cameras at a time. We have used motors by Preston and Scorpio with it. It should work with anything digital. The MDR is quite small, smaller than the battery charger that Preston uses for the HU3. It does drive by wifi, if the DP were to use his iPhone, then he would want to go into airplane mode and only re-enable the wifi. What we are doing is sending it out with an iPod touch. The App is not currently available to the masses, so no worries about anyone giving 'their opinion' about the stop. Anyway, if anyone in the NY area wants to play, just give a call. Premium Members Afton Grant Posted December 1, 2009 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 1, 2009 Probably the coolest application I've seen for the iPhone so far, and the closest one I've seen that might have a respectable function on set. I'm sure most of us have seen the iPhone slate, and the iPhone timecode generator - neither of which seem as though they're going to replace any traditional tool anytime soon. The phones aren't going anywhere, and they're only getting better, so I'm sure it's a matter of time before we do see them as viable tools in some way... but that way has yet to be seen. Where the iPhones will always be at a disadvantage assuming the form factor remains the same (and by all accounts, it will), they lack any sort of tactile input. For something such as pulling focus or iris, it's largely performed by feel - knowing what sliding to close down a full stop, or turning to change focus from 25 to 10 feet feels like. I'm sure an AC or DP doesn't want to have to constantly look back and forth between the action (or monitor) and the device to make sure their finger and the virtual slider is in the right place. As you say, in a 'real life' on-set scenario, or particularly for Steadicam work, it would be a challenge to pull by the 1st sliding their finger. There also seems to be a bit of a latency - of a similar level to my older Fox & Genio kits. I'm sure if I put this side-by-side with my BFD, there would be a noticeable delay. Interesting though...
