Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted September 25, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 25, 2004 I have reworked my old III system into something more versitile: Low-weight, extendable post, 12,24 volts, 1,2 or 3 batteries, frameline, several video outputs with amplifier, possibility for recorder on-board. Here it is shown with my new practice cage/ DV-cam cage, which has approx. the same weight as an SR3. The battery-mounts are from Aspen, with the V-lock from the Sony batteries. It is mounted on bars and support clamps, originally from Vocas matte-boxes, but these clamps can be used for all kinds of things. Jake, unfortunally this rig has nothing to do with the amount of work here :( But I had this always, as my second/backup rig. However, just lately I had to do a shooting that really needed a much lighter rig. With what I had, I could not do it in the given time (= 4minutes - 1 35mm roll) because of the location and the speed of the movements. And I am sure that my condition isgood, right now. That made me think about converting the old rig. The Master I have is very good for nice and precise moves, but on high speed action I find it too heavy. JonCastell Posted October 5, 2004 Report Share Posted October 5, 2004 I am looking for a part number or manufacturer of the 'plastic' 10pin male connector which connects the main sled electronics to the j-box on a model IIIa. I have searched the archives but unfortunately come short of any helpful results. Checked old CP documents and it is just noted as the 'plastic' connector. Rhys Duncan Posted May 5, 2005 Report Share Posted May 5, 2005 :huh: I have a 3a rig and it performs well , very well in fact but i am wanting to upgrade , short of buying a new one , i have been very interested in the MKV but have only seen them on the internet , i like the way they look , i am a steadicam fan but the one thing i have noticed with the new generation steadicam is its lack of distributed weight , my 3a is a bit of a block downstairs but that seems to be at times its saving grace, but i am a little tired of the add ons i have tacked on ie extra batterries etc , so what is the MKV like , is the hummingbird the way to go , I like the greenscreen but the 3a picture sure is tiny some days, my 3a arm is newly resprung and works a treat ,anyway any info much appreciated , :unsure: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I started off with a standard 3A sled. Howard replaced the jbox with a mkv jbox, gave me a pro post with up the post cabling, gave me a no tools mod for the gimbal, added a 12/24 volt convertor, cleaned up/serviced the monitor/electronics and gimbal and rebulit my vest. It was a great sled and very cost effective. A year or two later i then upgraded the sled even further to a mk-v evolution base system. lcd monitor, pagmounts and mk-v dbox. essentially keeping only the original gimbal and topstage. Mhodges Posted May 6, 2005 Report Share Posted May 6, 2005 Howard upgaded my 3A this past Fall and I've been extremely happy with the results. I essentially have a Nexus with the exception of a Pro post, 3A Gimbal and my Transvideo monitor which I'm coming very close to going ahead and upgrading. I know what you mean about the 3A mass. I always liked that long slow cadillac feel. I kept the original 3A monitor arm (the Long one.) It might be psychological but I feel it gives it that 3A feel with the extra length for my little Transvideo. I'm sure however that when I upgrade to Howard's Hummingbird that his arm will balance very nicely with his monitor. After the 3A the MK-V electronics seem like a miracle of simplicity and reliability and I'm a big fan of the way the battery modules function. Someone on the forum said it best when they commented that you could pick the thing up and beat off an attacker with it. It's very robust. I've now gone on to an MK-V Evolution and have had great success with it. Howard and his staff are always just a call or email away and the service has always been top-notch! I couldn't recommend them or the gear any higher. Directors, DOP's and especially first assistants love the rig for its simplicity and flexibility, I love it because it's flown everything I've thrown at it...plus it looks great.
