Cameras are Sony HDC-1500's. Gigawave is the only solution I can find in any searches thus far. Any other recommendations? Happy New Year! Andrew Fraser Posted January 4, 2010 Report Share Posted January 4, 2010 Look at the Gigawave range for the HDC cameras, the company which I've been working with has this combination and it seems to work well for them. Separate units on the camera for the video signal and control signal, each powered via V-Lock. Otherwise Links Research may have something. They just make a note to call them for details on specific cameras, but I figured they made something for the popular brands and models. It may even be able to interface with the current shader controls. Engineering is so picky, they'd throw a fit if we changed things too much.. Unlikely they will pursue that when the operator you are replacing got along with the current set up. Are you using your rig or have they bought one for you to use? They told me Andy requested a lightweight jumper on several occasions. We're only 1 week in and they already ordered 2 for me. The reason I posted this question is because Engineering asked me to recommend some options yesterday. I passed Gigawave and Link Research along to them and they are looking into it. As an operator I could care less about being wireless, especially since I did tonight's show on the Flyer LE with fiber tether and NO jumper. It can only get easier from here. But the higher ups are pressing the issue. If they've got money to spend, I'll let them. To answer your question about rigs, they haven't made a move on a new system yet. Everything is on my rig at least for the next 2 weeks. I passed them complete quotes on new Artemis, Clipper 312, PRO, XCS, and MK-V. I'm pulling for MK-V but they might lean towards Clipper. They end around the same price after prompter/program monitors, ring lights, and the whole 9 yards. On a side note, Bob Van Dorn mentioned your name last week. This was used in an ob truck setup, and for the engineering panel the standard Sony one was replaced in this setup with a panel by Gigawave. As such, I assume some features are unavailable being a 3rd party panel. It had two radio systems, one for the video signal and another for the control signal. Not sure of the cost though. Sony HDC cameras are supported by it as far as interfacing with the control port on the back panel, but Gigawave's shader and receiver has to be used.. Jim is an awesome guy and very helpful!! It works with a standard sony rcp. I have one and cant speak highly enough about it- no they are not paying me, but definitely deserve the recommendation, they're customer service for me was 10 out of 10!! It's great but only one video pass in the sled, so prompter, return, etc have to be external. I use a fiber jumper that was custom built at about $600. It's the only way. SOme of the rigs mentioned are very heavy and for field production. Why carry extra weight for a Video camera. MK-V is a great choice. If they have tons of $$$$ get the PRO. Additionally, I will be using the tally built into the TV Logic 7" HD monitor. They have photosensors already on hand for that. It would just be a matter of making a connector with the correct pins for the sled in question. Today, they confirmed that they want both Main and PGM Return to be HD monitors, so that narrows down the search. SkyDreams is going to hook us up with a deal on their AirPaint system which is essentially a wireless extension of the exact CCU's that we are using. The Boxx Meridian looks like a winner for the video link. The resulting problem is that now I have no PGM return. We will see just how much money they are willing to spend. After a $2mill studio overhaul, this is mere pennies. Every show we do gets heavier with Steadi and lighter with Jib and static shots. What kind of range are you looking for our of your wireless system? At AVS, we have 40 Link 1500 systems...and love them. We do Monday Night Football, Dancing with the Stars, The British Open, Kiwi Challenge, NBA All-Stars, Playoffs and Finals, etc. Had 4 on the Golden Globes last night and 6 on last year's Academy Awards. We can buy whatever brand we want...and it's Link for us. They are rock solid, and have great range, when engineered correctly. We use the Link with our LDK-6000 and short-back for a total camera weight of 24 lbs. (yes, 24, and that's WITH battery.) Just my two cents. Looking forward to hearing your final decision.
