Guest freedisc Posted October 4, 2004 Report Share Posted October 4, 2004 This maybe one of the dumbest questions but i have to ask... i am thinking of joining the steadi op field... but i dont know what system to start with... I know that saying goes.. buy what u can afford... but my answer is what you can afford may be not what yopu can do or what you want to do in the long run.. since i am new in the industry i have no idea what direction i should head with this. will bbuying a glidecam effect the possibly of being hired? I am currently a cameraman using a DVCPRO and want to expand my skills into this area. Should i start with a provid then head for the master series.. or is the likely hood of being hired as a steadicam op with the "video" industry not as good as the film industry?? There is the master series II and III and IIIA and modified systems provid,provid2+ not to meation the glidecam series that are for sale on the market and it is confusing the hack outta me. I know that this may get bias responce becos i m in the steadicam op forum but is the glidecam not up the the challenge against the steadicam? rEALLY CONFIUSED... any help and direction is appreicaited... Premium Members Jason Williams Posted October 4, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 4, 2004 Hi, I was looking at buying a Master Series rig, and had been using a Basson Steady until that point, and based on my needs, I was advised not to buy this rig as "it would be like buying a Formula 1 race car and not having the team" -- which I could relate to, after all I was going to spend £15,000 on that rig. The better advice was, to start off a little smaller, so I bought a Provid, at £9,400, and it works a dream. The one thing I would advise is don't go straight into the bigger rigs, you'll need the extra equipment to back the rig up, I find the Provid does the job well enough, that said I work with video. One more thing to be mindful of is the weight of the camera(s) you will be using, each arm has a different weight capacity, and in all honesty, the closer to the top of this the better as they perform better. I had a quick try of a Glidecam, and I can honestly say for what they paid for that, I paid for my old Basson rig, and that had an edge, a two peice arm, versus the one part on the Glidecam, plus the ability of modding the rig, which I did, and eventually was a decent workable peice of kit, I have some video somewhere to prove that it was a decent rig ... after some work! More than likely you can find the answer you seek in this years forum, as it seem like this question is asked on a monthly basis now. Otherwise, please look in the past years. In a nutshell, look at the various rigs, try them, and and buy what works for you. Don't be in a rush or just buy the first one because it seems good. Good luck. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have thought about this same question alot, and have found it nearly impossible to come up with anything from the search forums method. however this question is like asking, "whats best final cut or avid" in an avid forum. Just see what kinda response you get their. anyhows i'm in the same situation as you and i've been following steadicams for years. However i will completly hold off any thoughts of what type of rig to buy untill i have done the optex course in a couple of weeks. Perhaps we can repost what rigs we actually got in a few months time. Would be funny to see who got the best deal 'n' stuff. Try a course first, you spend some money but you know the basics, the pro´s and cons and THEN you might decide what to do and what to buy!
