what kind of Steadicam is this

I found this setup at my company's back closet, way in the back. Not sure what model this is. I know it used to fly a XL-1 in 2001. I found the howto video, watch it learned the balancing. nice rig, will be fun to learn this technique.

 

The problem..... I'm using an HVX200 I really want to use my wideangle adapter but the weight is to much with adapter. the arm sags and bottoms out. I've try twisting the metal thumbknob helps some but needs more spring.

 

I've read a few post as I surf around inhere found info about rubberbands?

 

Any help you can provide me would be very appreciative.

Hi Stephen,

 

That's a Flyer LE, if I remember right.

 

Top payload is 19lbs. You should be fine with the HVX and wide angle adapter, unless it's a 9lb adapter =). You shouldn't need any rubber bands. Keep twisting till the arms are slightly above level. (the camera side of each bone is higher.)

Nope, not a Flyer LE. I believe what you have is the Steadicam Mini. http://www.steadicam.com/videoMini.html

 

The original Flyer sled was based on the Mini sled. Slight difference in the gimbal grip and handle.

 

The Mini claimed a 15 lb weight capacity. It should have plenty of lift for the HVX200 with wide angle adapter...that setup should be under 10 lbs, I'd guess. Not sure how to advise re: adjusting the arm, as I never owned a Mini. But it should work with your set up, no rubberbands needed. (although the Mini arm is not nearly as good an arm as the Flyer arm).

For the record Stephen, the above photo is NOT how you operate steadicam. At least the camera is on the right side of the post, and the vest is indeed on the operator.

 

I don't know Mark, the mini arm does have it's own sock, and it doubles as a lamp. My G50 doesn't even do that. =)

Thanks yea thats the rig.

 

What do you'll think of the setup. I have to use what I got but it seems really cool and everybody freaks when I'm shooting in public. been trying to practice couple hours a week with it.

Mini... but you should never dock like this! One should dock it just under the top stage, not under the gimbal handle. I flew once with rubber bands on the arm... I'm pretty sure it was a DVX100 or 200 plus modulus and motorola production walkie... wow, that took me back a bit...
