Hi all,

I recently started a intensive workout program called P90X. It is an at home workout program which is a cross between weights, cardio, yoga, core, and plyometrics. The workouts are 6o mins long and NOT easy by any means but doable at the same time . I would highly recommend it. Since I began my strengh and stamina have improved 10 fold and I'm not even half way through. It has really helped my operating in all areas from controlling the rig to the fatigue factor. If you are interested just google p90x and a ton of stuff will show up. I PROMISE you that you will be happy with the results and you will feel better when you are operating and when you are not.

I've attempted this workout twice (stopping the first time because of a car accident, and the second due to lack of funds... for someone like me it meant a hefty food budget increase) and I have to agree. Both times the first week was a bear, but by the end of the 2nd I felt I was in quite the groove, and by the end of the 4th I felt fantastic. A buddy of mine has been working on the videos for close to a year now and though you can tell by watching the DVD he says that seeing Tony Horton do that stuff in person is quite amazing. He's over 50 and is in the best shape of anyone's life!

P90X is no joke, and I tell everyone I meet that it is the only TV product I believe in. I made it to week 6 before stopping due to lack of time, but I plan on getting back into soon. If anyone here needs to work on back strength this is a great way to do it. Justin keep it up because beach season is coming. :)

I've been considering P90X for some time. I am curious though Brian, could you please explain what it was specifically that increased your food budget? I'm really interested in hearing about that. I don't know anyone who has actually done P90X, and it is a bit hard to find an honest critique, so seeing what you all have had to say has helped me come to a clearer decision. I'm gonna go for it! Thanks for posting your thoughts on this system guys.

Anyone familiar with how this stacks up with a traditional weight training and cardio regiment? I'm open to adding something new to my overall workout, but I make several visits to LA Fitness a week as it is for strength and mental health reasons.

For that matter, what sort of exercise does everyone do to "stay in shape". I try to focus on compound weight training exercises in specific orders, no muscle confusion (yet). Leg training includes squats, leg presses and lunges.

Hey Ron!

Well, first, you're buying a 90 day supply of the drink mix, and a 90 day supply of the protein bars, if you're following strictly that is. On top of that the program wants my calorie intake somewhere around 2800/day IIRC (need to look it up again) and a most of that is protein. And meat is a lot more expensive than say, rice, or pasta. To be fair, I was eating pretty inexpensively before (and even more-so now), mostly because I put all my money into my rig two years ago (right before the first time I started the program). But the second time I started the program I had just come into an unexpected debt (no, not the "I know a guy who knows a guy" kinda debt!) and just couldn't rationalize the extra spending on food. And still can't.

Incidentally, I also have less body fat than P90x is trying to get you DOWN to, so my eating plan was slightly adjusted.

You DO NOT need to buy any of the recovery drinks, specialized shakes, etc to get good results. A good weigh protein which you can get anywhere, a banana/blueberries/etc, and skim milk in a blender is basically what you are paying for. The P90x programs makes its money off the additional supplements, bars, etc not the program itself. As a result they are expensive and I can see how they would get pricey if you bought them all. My roommate and I started the program 7 weeks ago. He purchased all the p90x supplements, recovery drink, bars etc, and I did not and the results are the same. Protein is more expensive than carbs but just be smart about your purchasing habits. I would recommend Trader Joes if you have one by you. My food budget since I started has actually gone down. Why? Because I stopped buying the pre-made/frozen meals that are easy to make but expensive because of the convienence factor and on the whole much less healthy. Ok...enough about the food budget.

With regards to Williams question about the workouts themselves I can only talk from experience. I used to be a LA Fitness gym rat. Weights 4 days a week and cardio 1-2 depending upon the week. I would go to the gym just to go. By that I mean it was a mental thing. I would feel better just because I went when in actuality my workouts were a joke "going through the motions" My workout partner moved to Long Beach so I never had anyone pushing me. As a result I plateaued for 2 yrs!!! The great thing about p90x is that it never lets you plateau. Bottom line is that you will look great and feel great. My stamina and strength when in the rig has gone up more than I could have possibly imagined. Some of the workouts are more muscle intensive and others are more cardio but no matter what one you are doing you will be sweating big time. The worst p90x workout I have had since I began is better than the best La Fitness workout I have had in 2 years. Its no joke. One thing to keep in mind is that you have to be 100% committed. Because the workouts are not easy and often times very difficult, especially at the beginning, it could be very easy to become discouraged. However once you start to see and feel the results it becomes a lot easier.

One other thing if your still skeptical. The other day I went to La Fitness to see if I could put my membership on hold until the end of the program. While I was there I was curious to see how the results would translate into a "real gym" environment. So I went to my old friend the bench press. I pressed 20 lbs more than I did 2 months earlier and I have not lifted a weight over 45 lbs in 2 months.

Absolutely agreed, like I said, if you're following strictly you're buying those things. For me, I really need supplements of some sort. Be it theirs, or simply another source of X amount of protein and Y amount of carbs, etc... And lb for lb, the price of the supplements is what I would pay for those nutrients anyway. My food budget issue is probably unique, and the supplements are only the tip of the increase for me, most of it is the actual food. Like I said, I was already eating inexpensively (no eating out, no frozen dinners, etc...) and believe me, I eat much cheaper than people who eat much less food than I do. It's the only necessary expense I can alter other than moving to cheaper housing. I've become really good at it! On top of that, I have less body fat than a professional athlete and am 20-30 lbs UNDER weight, would be more except for the muscle I already have. The program is designed for people to lose fat while building muscle, so i have to do things a little differently.

So Ron, probably no food budget issues for you! Which was really what i was trying to get at before, but unfortunately never stated.

When I'm making a living again, I'll get back to P90x, hands down!

Guys, Thanks for all the info. It is a huge help and has answered most of the lingering questions I had about this program. When I look at it practically I have to say that I've certainly spent money in dumber ways than this! Thanks again guys and good luck to you on that "making a living again" thing Brian!

This is bazaar. I just started doing P90X as well. I've considered it a thousand time and finally order it a few weeks ago. I love it.

I was a college wrestler and can't stand to be trained any more. When I go to the gym with out a partner, which is most of time, I either plateau, half ass it, or get too busy to go. There is nothing I hate more than having a gym Membership I don't use.

These work outs are tough and fun. I'm in the middle of my second week. I hope to make the 90 with out missing a day. Actually, I'd like to make it my permanent routine. Time will tell.

I already eat that diet so I didn't need any of there supplements.

My only recommendation is don't try to be a hero. I haven't done some of these moves in years so, I'm making sure I don't injure myself in the first month.

These works out are nothing like a traditional weight training and cardio work out. It's an elite athlete work out. It's high impact. I'd say if you do spin class, monday, kettle bell tuesday, Vinyasa Yoga wednesday, body weight circuit training thursday, hill climber on friday, and a 50 laps of free style swimming on saturday, each for and hour, you'd get a similar result. Or if you joined a wrestling, boxing, MMA program and ate properly.

For me 1 hour a day in my home is perfect.

Good luck everyone.

Well.. I too decided to be in shape again for my .. Ack! .. 46th birthday. Jan 4 th started a diet and right now dropped almost 30 pounds. 5 weeks ago started p90x and am completely amazed at my gains in strength and stamina. I'm working on a series so the needed 7hours sleep has been the hard part for sure. The food is easy as catering offers any possible combo of carbs and proteins. It is an intense workout to be sure... And you do need 100 percent commitment...

Getting up at 4am for a 7 am call hurts after a 14 hour day before. I haven't felt this good for some time... I completely recommend this program if you re serious.. It hurts, but it works.
