steadicam website

Hello Fellow Ops,

Here's my first steadicam website, I did it myself with iweb (great tool). There're showreel, equipment, pictures and a little history of my jobs in general. Do you think I should be more specific on steadicam projects and not other stuff? I do a lot of things in the biz other then steadicam... but I don't know if it's worth to put them...

thanks for all the inputs, soon I'll have to add my first film stuff did with SR2 16mm, very very nice camera to work with, I recommend as I was told correctly to always trim the lateral adj because film shifting from one side to the other is noticeable (unbelievable but true)

p.s. is it ok to have the reel to charge before it starts? do you think it takes too long before it can play?

Hey Matteo. Nice site, simple, easy to use. Nice reel, good low mode stuff, short and sweet. My only note is that some of the transitions are a bit harsh. Might be a good idea to throw in a small dissolve here or there and maybe fade up from black for the opening shot.

Overall, really nice.

Matteo:

Didn't have a chance to look at site but just wanted to let you know about something I just learned about iWeb--I had backed up a copy of my sites by doing a "save as" but when I suffered a system drive failure recently, it turned out that iWeb stores everything in a single place called Domain, tucked away deep in the system folders. Without it, you are starting all over again from scratch (like I'm about to). I had about 40 pages built in there--ouch! Backups backups...

I've said it in other threads, so I'll just give you my quick $.02 on hosting demo reels..

I'd recommend staying away from Quicktime Streaming if you can and use a flash player of your choice. If you don't feel like you have the time or web savvy to implement one at the code level like I did, a good option for you might be a Vimeo.com premium account that you can embed in your site.

Here's my reasoning: I'm within a corporate network right now, and it's blocking your reel from playing. Being the computer savvy guy that I am, I'd go and install the plugins to play it (although admin rights will ban me from installing). I wouldn't expect the UPM or anyone with a busy schedule to call up IT and have them install quicktime plugins so they can watch Joe Steadicam's reel..

I'm all about making it easiest for the end viewer to get what they want and minimize the chances of cross platform viewing problems, so take my advice for what it's worth..

Otherwise, very clean, simple, and uncluttered...all good things for an online portfolio.

Eric has a good point, something I didn't consider because I have a flash player on my PDA. It looks like Vimeo support is in the works (for Plus users), but for now there is the YouTube App (not my favorite place to host professionally).

Matteo, you could try giving the viewer an option and having one QT and one flash version. I could only get half way through the material because of the huge QT trying to load.

I like Vimeo.com myself for hosting video. I also did my site in iweb, but edited it to not look like the templates. And as Charles mentioned, backed up the domains folder.

Thanks all very much for the good words and helpful suggestions. It's very workable with iweb so I'll refine it in the days coming.

Eric, my goal was exactly this, the possibility to show the reel on set, but I think I did something wrong because it's not working on Iphones, might be 63 MB dimension of the video file? I did it QT download and not QT streaming.

I solve this by adding a dedicated page, seems it works, not good quality but haven't seen better on the iphone even in youtube, here's the link

http://www.maquvision.com/maquvision/Iphone_reel.html

now the reel starts immediately, I reduce to 30 MB the dimension and this make everything easier.

Hi Sebastien,

thanks for your post. I did check and probably it's because of continuos changing pics and moving things around. Refreshing the page should fix the problem. At least in my computer was like that. Please let me know if it does work and possibly what you think of my reel.

Thanks again.

My best,

maqu
