Single Take 7D Music Video

Steadicam Pilot - Canon 7D w/ Tokina 11-16.. Ran the lens at 16mm, f6.3. ISO 2000. No focus control! agh.

 

Learnt a lot of things on this video, 1 - Frame guides.. tape some on!

 

The rig weighed nothing and had a drop time of about 1.5 seconds, however the whole thing was so last minute i had no time to get a weight plate made.. something that is on the cards right now.

 

Its amazing how slow it looks on playback.. i remember running a lot faster.

 

I started the setup in missionary as she walks onto the stage and came around the band. Switched right before she leaves the mic and we go down the stairs.. steep little bastards those were.

 

Don Juan all the way down the stairs to the bench with the girl on it. Switched back to missionary here.

 

And then backwards missionary for the rest of the video... fun times.

 

I really wish i could have gone wider in places but the artist would not allow me to shoot anything wider than an MCU... oh well.

Really nice operating.

Especially when you did it with the light weight rig.

 

The only small mistake, if you could call it that - is at about 2,30, where you see the artist running to her next mark?

But really cool work.

Joe, this is simply extraordinary operation. I had never thought that a pilot coupled with the 7D was capable of such professional, flawless stabilization.

 

This gives me hope, as I just recently purchased a steadicam pilot-aa mount to use with my 7D. I'm finding it really difficult to achieve dynamic balance with the small camera only mounted (and a tokina 11-16mm).

 

You mentinoned you did not have any weight plate mounted on the pilot, but any rails, mattebox or any kind of extra accessories at all you used alongside the 7d for that shot, or bare camera only?

Thanks for the comments, glad you guys liked it.

 

Have a weight plate being made right now and also picked up a zacuto universal baseplate while at nab to add some more weight and a follow focus.

Hi Joe,

 

Make sure when you get to the point of using a follow focus motor that you use a single piece rail for your motor. As flexible as the Zacuto rail system is, if you use a few rails screwed together, the motor can easily spin when operating. Zacuto does sell some longer rails but the choice is limited. Cinevate has some lengthy single piece carbon fibre 15mm rails that you may wish to consider.

Good to know Andrew, thanks, the standard rods it comes with are 12's, which are definitely long enough to get a motor on, and depending on the lens.. possibly a mattebox.

 

Will have a look into the cinevate ones however.
