Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted March 22, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 22, 2010 Any smart people have any thoughts as to how Obama Care will effect our union health insurance (if at all)? I'm not looking for a political discussion (Voted for Obama, glad I did, wanted health care reform, would have liked it if it was better than it was but all and all glad it passed) just some facts or factual insights about how this may effect our hours (400/300/500/etc.). Premium Members Henry Gelhart Posted March 23, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 23, 2010 (edited) Well yeah a lot of people here in *Republican* Idaho got freaking mad about that bill! Now, our Governor Butch Otter is considering to sue the Federal Government and issued a "Idaho Health Freedom Act" Uhmm... yeah! In case everything works out for him... (literally) 'poor' Idaho may spend over a $100k in court fees. YIHA! Premium Members Mike McGowan SOC Posted March 23, 2010 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 23, 2010 Yea, I have a few friends that I debate this stuff on a sort of political forum, it's an endless discussion.... However, I'm hoping we can stick to the, "now that it's been passed (or on it's way to being passed) what can we expect the impact will be to us as camera people and union members?" topic. Any thoughts?
Moderators Janice Arthur Posted March 23, 2010 Moderators Report Share Posted March 23, 2010 Mike; The first positive I can see is if you switch back and forth from Union to another insurance policy that neither can prohibit you for a pre-existing condition. Hurrah! (We all know the insurance find lots of reasons to not cover you too.) I've had the hours and then not had the hours and it always scared me to take the chance and leap from one to the other. As far as the studio negiotations, I don't know what the upside or downside might be. Seems like the studios, now that they would have to cover all their regular employees, might claim some more expenses on their end. There are threats of higher premiums, etc, too. Maybe the tax breaks would benefit them, don't know enough. JA
