Storm Cases

Finally got myself new cases for my rig.

 

Couldnt help but post some pics.

 

 

The smaller/deeper one is for the vest w/arm inside and the lid has pockets for cables paperwork etc.

The longer one has the sled batteries and docking bracket.

Storm Peli cases are lighter than standard Peli's so I like em for air travel.

Im Storm for life now, won't use Peli again, I value my finger nails too much.

Well, they were pretty firm rivals up until Pelican bought them out a couple of years ago. I'm really glad they kept the Storm lineup though, I agree with the others here as I have been a Storm fan since its introduction (used to live near the Hardigg factory back east and had friends who worked there until the Pelican buyout set them up nicely). The few Pelicans I have for one reason or another make me absolutely batty when it comes to opening and closing the latches. Might have to do a firesale one of these days and replace them all.

I'm in the process of converting all 12 of my Peli's to Storm Peli's. I've had a pretty serious problem with Peli's new style latches coming open in transit. More the once I've littered the baggage claim belt with expensive gear. The storm latch design virtually eliminates the chance of the latch opening without being actuated. Much better. Also, a lot of the redesigned Peli's are much heavier than their old design models. I had an old 1650 that weighed 73lbs loaded. Moved everything over to the new model 1650 and it now weighs 82lbs. The storm equivalent size I just bought comes in at 71lbs.

 

Great case and same warranty/support from Pelican.

I asked the peli guys at a show just after they bought out Storm if they were going to can it or keep them going, and he said 'its a good product, theres no reason to get rid of it', so it sounds like even Peli know the Storm is better....

If you are in the UK you might want to check out Explorer Cases- http://www.explorercases.com/ . They are as good or better than storm or Pelican. They are made in Europe. Spotted them at a dive store in Istanbul. Great quality. Might not match Peli and Storm prices in the US, but better in Europe.

Yeah I had seen the Explorer cases, to be honest though, we get a very good price on the Storms and I trust them, and the size of the case fits well with the product etc etc, so they would have to be half the price to justify the change.

 

Might get quotes anyway just to see...

What cases did you get? I need to travel with an essentially stock Steadicam Pilot and need to pick up some cases. Would you recommend two cases, or could I get away with one like it comes in the backpack? Thanks for the help!

Luc, You could probably get away with just one case for the pilot. Look into the IM2950 equivalent to the 1650 case. Just depends on personal preference if you want every component in one case or not.

 

Go to pelicans website and just browse the dimensions you may be able to get away with a smaller pelican.

Hi Luc,

 

A few months ago I bought a bunch of Pelicans, inserts and desiccant containers from what used to be called "Cases 4 Less." It was recommended by Mr. Fletcher, who dispenses a lot of good advice here. The company has rebranded itself into The "Nalpak Group"in the past couple of months. Prices are as close to as good as it gets anywhere and the people who answer the phone are very helpful. But before you do that you have a do some homework on your own. First you should lay out your sled along with the arm and take a bunch of measurements. You also have a stand to contend with and other bits, wires, batteries and possibly a charger that you will want to get in the case. I wouldn't put your vest inside the same Pelican as your sled. You want to keep moisture out of the Pelican (or Storm or whatever sealed case you choose). Once you know what will be the length, height and width requirements, you can spend some time combing through either the Nalpak site or another similar site and narrow down your case selection to a few possibilities.

 

A 1650 is one of the biggest cases you can get. I have one for my rig but it is bigger than yours. I'm sensing you can get away with a smaller case. You want one with wheels and possibly a pull out handle if you go for a big bruiser like a 1650. Gotta warn you though a 1650 is heavy when loaded with gear. Don't skimp on the extras and get yourself at least 2 desiccant packs if you get a 1650 sized case. I would recommend 4 so you always have 2 spares ready to go when the others get saturated and need to be conditioned in your oven.

 

There is also the issue of pick and pluck foam versus other options but that is another topic.

Thanks for the info. Doing some quick measurements, I think I can fit into a Storm 2720 but need to look into it more. I'm not yet invested in a pro-battery system and don't plan on it anytime soon. Most other accessories will probably travel in my Lowepro Photo backpack, so it would just be sled and maybe arm.

 

Thanks for the reminder on desiccant containers. I'm traveling to India in January and those will be a must then.
