I watched some videos on youtube to check out the steadicam and operator(s)... And I noticed an interesting 'setup' i havn't seen that way before, there are two operators (Johan Sandklef is not operating... by the way does anyone know, who's operating?) Some interesting videos: (at 1:48) in that-> both operators running side by side, what is that good for? ;-) http://www.youtube.com/user/eurovision#p/u/8/XVvqCeI2mto (at~ 2:45) Actually I just wanted to start a thread about everything that belongs to the eurovision song contest... (of course about steadicam work and not about the music... (I don't know what's expected to happen this year..) And when I saw (the second video I linked) I've no clue why there are both operators running side by side. I Think that the two operators are rehearsing the shots together, because the producers wants to be sure that there's a backup operator, who knows all the moves, if one of the op's gets sick? Or, maybe not? Thomas A fair guess, and ultimately very likely. In this particular shot, to me it looks like the second op is heading to a new mark or to his stand. Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted May 17, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 17, 2010 In the first shot I could maybe see a Director calling out the two shots to counter Op #1's sweep / wrap but then Op #2 ends up lingering back and forth in front of the talent casting a shadow on her dress and that shot makes no sense to me not knowing what is being called out by the Director but it may have made perfect sense for their purpose. Neither could be half as bad as that run-on sentence I just wrote! :rolleyes: In the second shot it could be one guy is tight and the other is wide, then Op #2 overtakes Op #1 and goes behind him. At first I thought maybe one guy was low-mode but it is hard to tell 100% Without hearing what the Director is screaming in their ears it's impossible to judge or second guess what is happening in either of these clips. There is no way to judge this or discuss it without additional information from the operators. On the other hand, I could be wrong since I just had an op 2000+ miles away pass judgment with a DP on a very tough low-mode shot I did over some crazy terrain he'd never seen, not only is that quite the magic trick, it's also quite unprofessional to do so. Is he trying to break the camera off the efp or was he just that cool. If you look at the monitor corner you see in the corner of the video, you see that op 1 whips his camera as a transition for a cut to op 2. Tim Tønnessen Posted May 19, 2010 Report Share Posted May 19, 2010 To answer your questions The ops is Tim Tønnessen (me) and Tom Moen (he is also on this board) The first video is me getting ready to take over the shot from Tom. The second shows me, using Tom’s shot, to get to the other side of the stage. (Yet I've just seen the rehearsal clips) When I watch TV (mainly talkin about german tv) there are many whip pans in it.. sometimes way too much.. but in some situations like a cut to the next camera I think they're still cool!
