I just got mine in the mail. They are available for order now. Same list price as the ST model it replaced(street price is about 2 grand). It now has user adjustable frame lines and the ability to put 1/4-20 mounts on the top and sides. Unfortunately they did not add an image flip function but the addition of the top and side mounts mean you can mount it upside down or put it in a yoke mount. Anyone know if anyone makes a yoke mount this monitor would fit in?

 

Haven't had a chance to play with it much but outdoor visibility seems pretty damn good. Still no green screen but for 2 grand seems like a nice little HD monitor. At the daylight monitor shootout I thought the ST version of this monitor was one of the best ones there.

I also remember this Marshall doing very well at the shootout. I think what might have steered folks away was the 4:3 screen -- I don't think this particular model had the overheating issues some of the other Marshalls had. A great monitor for the price. I wonder how the bubble will work -- I like to save a buck like everyone else but at $250 I wonder about the quality/adjustability.

It seemed rock solid at the shootout. Strangely it was their non extra bright monitor that seemed to have heat issues. Since this monitor uses a transflective backlight instead of a super jacked up backlight brightness I wouldn't expect too much trouble. I am heading down to Louisiana for a feature and might go from that to another one so if there are heat issues a summer in the south will definitely expose them. If I have problems I will definitely be banging down Marshall's door until they fix them(or give me my money back).

I am very interested. Currently using a ball joint that is solid but I don't like the fact that you can upset level while tilting.

The fact that the only option in the menu seemed to be to turn it on or off was a little discouraging. Marshall really needs to get over their fear of features. That is the biggest thing their monitors lack.

Any follow-up on how these are working out? Are they too small in 16:9 mode being only 6.5" at 4:3?

I'll report back once I run it through its paces at my upcoming outdoor shoot. And thanks to Charles and all who helped put together "The Great Daylight Monitor Shootout", the info I got from that thread really helped me make my decision.

I have three of these monitors and have been very happy with them. Plenty of menu options if you get the right version. No heat or viewing issues here in Florida. I love them.

I have been very happy with it. I find the screen to be plenty big enough even in 16:9. Heat has not been an issue even when I had it covered up with rain gear in New Orleans.

Looks pretty darn good for the money along with an almost centered battery plate on the back and decent inputs.

Had my stx 6.5" with AB mount for about a month now. Great outdoors! Have viewed HD and SD using it. Nice and sharp and the frame lines are great. Can't wait to see how the level turns out.

I am saving up some money for the Transvideo HD monitor.

But If this Marshall monitor is good enough, there's a really big save there.

 

What did you do about cabeling?

Are you using both a power cable and a bnc, or did you alter the Marshall housing with a lemo connector?

 

I own a Clipper 312 with the Standard 7" Composite monitor, so I guess that everything is an upgrade?

 

Could you post some pics of your setup, using the Marshall on your rig?

While it doesn't have all of the features the Marshall actually has better daylight viewability than the Transvideo.

You can't really put HD-SDI through a lemo so you end up with a a seperate BNC most of the time anyway. I wired up a nice right angle XLR for power and use a right angle BNC to attach my video line(totally unnecessary but keeps it all tucked in nice).

 

The main feature this monitor is lacking is an image flip function. Don't need it for poor mans lowmode but for regular low mode you must flip the monitor. Not a huge deal but it is a feature that would save time on set.

I bought a 50$ 7" no brand LCD to use for return signal, for on air.

And it has better image than the 7" on my Clipper.

 

How did you mount your monitor on the sled?

A special yoke, with the CG of the monitor taken in to account?

Sent an email off to Marshall Electronics to see if there was any appetite on their end to create a sales juggernaut by making (what would be to them) an inexpensive firmware update to this monitor providing "image flip" capability.

Response from a Marshall Sales Manager...

 

 

The flip situation is not just software but it needs to be in the DNA of the manufactured LCD panel. If it was as easy as just writing some code, it would have been done last year. We are continuing to bring out more features and improve the product.

 

The best I can say is to keep an eye on out web site, we will be making some announcements for IBC that might be of interest to you.
