Premium Members Charles Papert Posted June 1, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 1, 2010 I heard rumors of this monitor, which debuted at NAB, being "daylight viewable"--quotes used here because that phrase can mean different things to different people, of course. We did a mini "monitor shootout" at Bandpro last week (no rotisserie this time, more like a toaster oven...?) and placed the 7.4" outside next to a TB6 and a Nebtek Solar 7. Suffice to say that the 7.4" wasn't in the running. Might make a nice monitor for those who only do studio work, especially if they need to see a particular accurate image--this monitor has great viewing angle and tonal reproduction--but it goes bye-bye outside. Great color rendering and off angle viewability but the glass was far too reflective, especially outdoors. Tamuz is sending a new model this week with the HDMI upgrade AND no glass on the monitor face. This should reduce the reflection issues dramatically. I'll post here once the new model comes in. We had those two monitors separated at the shootout so I would hesitate to say which is more viewable. Overall most agreed that of the LCD's, the Transvideo was probably the best. The Nebtek and Marshall were good contenders though. The Transvideo at the time had the best set of options, but the Solar7SC is on its way to having everything critical for Steadicam use (some are still a work in progress). Without a doubt the Transvideo is a fine monitor and will not disappoint, but it is a lot of money for a technology which is quickly on the move, so it is a short-term investment (i.e. will start to lose value in the short rather than long term). Marshall apparently has a monitor or two of interest. There was a fellow, a few weeks ago who was shilling these here on the forum from a company named BON. The feature set is pretty remarkable for a monitor in the $1,500. range (USD). BON is going to be at IBC at booth 11.A60. It may be worth heading over to check out their daylight viewable (or so they say) BPM-071S monitor. The product page is here for the interested. The Marshall is pretty good bang for the buck at $1700 and change. The BON monitor has a centered battery mount (A/B or V-lock), scopes, image flip, audio meters taken from the SDI feed and transreflective.
