It's once again time to bring up that old chestnut: is Mike Bennett going to return to his throne as the Savior of the over-paying, under-insured Steadicam masses? Anyone in touch with him? That year-and-a-half separation period with Dolle is long over, no? I need a new insurance policy!

I talked to Michael Bennett again and he told me that he did not think he would be able to get a program organized for Steadicam Equipment Insurance until the first of the year. He is very confident that he can help us out, however, and give us a product and price that we will like. He is now with Aon which I do not know personally but he says they have a long history of insuring the Entertainment Industry. His number at Aon is: 513-562-4539 and he said he would be happy to talk to anyone who has questions, but he won't be able to give any hard information until January.

I just found the Walter P. Dolle insurance website. I didn't know they had one!

Plus I guess I didn't realize that Mechanical breakdown was covered. That's cool!

http://www.wpdolle.com

(this link is now on the Steadicam Guild web site)

Here is the general Steadicam policy

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steadicam Program

The program is underwritten by the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company which has a Best Rating of A.

Coverage is written on a full replacement cost basis (no deduction for depreciation at time of loss) and is worldwide in scope. We offer two deductible options of $500 (standard) or $1,000 which is a 10% credit of the premium.

In addition to the equipment schedule, we cover any leased or rented equipment up to the value of your owned equipment or $100,000, whichever is less, at no additional charge. We also cover mechanical breakdown at no charge. In conjunction with the leased or rented equipment, you also receive $5,000 for loss of use coverage should your rental agreement make you responsible for their down time.

We also offer rental reimbursement coverage for either a $5,000 or $10,000 limit as an option. The policy minimum premium is $1,000 including options. A 25% down payment is required to bind coverage.

The program has been in existence for about 6 years and we currently have 130 participants country wide.

This is primarily for my NY steadicam brethren. Who do you guys use for your insurance in the tri-state area. The insurance company i was using stopped insuring photography and motion picture equipment so now I'm in search of someone new. Any help is always appreciated. Sincerely Claus

i posted this last week before our visit from the neighborhood hackerman...

looking to buy my own rig and of course want to insure it. i've looked in the archives and already gotten some valuable info; however, i live in taiwan, so i'm not sure if anyone has any input into american or european companies that are willing to insure equipment that's working abroad.

rob van gelder wrote me saying that his insurance was started in europe and is carried over to thailand. my situation is slightly different as i'll be buying the rig while already established in a foreign country.

if any of you guys/gals know of a company or are currently using a company that can insure me out here in taiwan, i'd really appreciate it. taiwanese companies don't insure film gear period, so that's not an option either.

one company that i've found from the archives is wp dolle. i've written them directly to find out if they'll insure me. anyone other than david allen grove under their coverage? thoughts?

thanks,

jake pollock

taipei, taiwan

Yes, insurance is very expensive, and it is not an easy decision to have one or not.

My latest claim, due to a broken bolt in the socket block has set me back around $ 3500.

The premium is around $2800, and if the insurence pays me back, I will probably"only" pay around $500.

You can save the money for the insurance and hope nothing happens, some yoars will be OK, but you can have bad luck too.

Also, directors want more and more "sharp" and speedy movements. Partly due to the on and offline editing where they can ramp up so nicely to 100fps without really degrading. Then they expect you to do that in real life too.

This also increases the risk of failure and damage, not only to your rig but also to the camera which is most of the time much more expensive.

although that camera is normally insured, you do have that "own-risk" that is between $1000 and $ 4000.

A crushed eyepiece for a Arri 435 and 535 is worth more than that and it is one of the first things to go in the event of a crash.

Do the math-take the risk or not.......
