Guest Ant Posted July 2, 2010 Report Share Posted July 2, 2010 (edited) Hey Guys Just made my own Antlers, I refuse to pay the high cost to buy them, and they are so hard to get a hold of in the first place. Sp I have made my own for a low cost and very adaptable. Light weight and fully extendable from around 140cm to 190cm, if needed to go that wide, and can be easily modified to be made shorter. I have also designed the T section (Vertical Pole) to expand from 21cm to 47cm. With custom made weights at 25grams each and I use two weights mainly on either end, the whole system is neat and pulls down to 55cm wide in total for storage, It has a 3/8 thread at the bottom for universal attachment to any camera or rig and I have made a support bracket to go 15mm poles for the Antlers to go on camera such as Red One as another option. If you choose to make your own, Jerry Holway, the inventor of the Antlers®, and I, would appreciate that you not refer to them as Antlers®. Given the amount of machine work involved in producing this device, the cost is actually quite reasonable when you consider what is really involved. Make your own? Go right ahead. Anthony, you are a new member with exactly TWO posts. Must you come in advertising a rip off product under "brackets/widgets" instead of paying the fee to become a sustaining member? Or would that qualify as "refusing to pay the high cost?" Seriously, if you want to make your own "antlers" that's your business, but to come in here and step on the toes of Brant and Jerry is nothing short of being a lecherous scum. IMHO, you should not only refrain from calling them Antlers, you should refrain from selling them unless you've come up with some HUGE improvement that the manufacturer has refused to incorporate. When I saw the latest version at the Tiffen swap meet around Cinegear time I bought them instantly from Jerry. They are so well thought out that I could think of no improvement needed and the build quality is top notch. While they are simple in concept the small details which make them easy to mount and use are what set them apart. I work primarily in the sreies TV world and if I cannot put my ideas into play NOW I will get no second chance. The Instant mounting and trim of this device is truly priceless. Russ hitting yourself in the head with them will be the first thing that happens during your initial pan. Now cue the assistant to also hit his/her head. Along comes the hot wardrobe chippie who will try and be funny...she hangs some clothes on it. Much laughter Take two...you hit your head again. You mention to the actor to be careful or he'll hit his head just as the dp walks into one of the weights. He walks back to the village while rubbing his head. Take three, you are still apologizing to the dp as the lead actor walks into it. Makeup is needed to conceal the bruise. Crafty break. Mmmm, fried food! You come back from crafty with a tummy ache to find another shirt on a hanger dangling from your antlers, plus an msds taped to the camera warning of emf related health problems. You shake it off, hump the mother, hitting yourself in the head once again. The a.d. yells "Makeup!" for your third, and biggest bruise. More laughter Cue the sound deptartment -- after being the brunt of many a camera joke they are aggressive and lob several wise cracks your way. You are an oak. Never let them see you sweat! You don the sled and wack the boom guy on the head on purpose for a little payback. Life is sweet. During take 4 the the 4x4 double held by the key grip catches a gust of wind and gets snagged on one of the weights. As you dock you hit yourself in the head one more time -- lucky the a.d. didn't see it (though the boom guy did -- drat!). Take 5 is flawless. When the director calls cut, you put the sled onto your shoulder to rest, wacking the dp in the head while he's checking his meter. After a few mumbled curse words he asks the key grip for a hacksaw to render your new antlers obsolete. The best boy approaches with hack saw and a new 4x4 double. Fine...you throw in the towel and remove the antlers. The second was along the lines of what you said, but I'm glad I didn't go there as that may have preempted your response - couldn't have said it better. Antlers do work, but I haven't used mine in years for the exact reasons Ron says. I watched the Executive Producer of Sex & the City and later Kevin Bacon walk into mine (luckily after I had gone out of my way to warn them both about the things and covered the ends in bright green tape). Luckily, both had a sense of humor about it (after a quick WTF moment with stares of death). I will never use them around actors again, but have not sold them just in case something weird comes up. I had a call last year for a job doing landscapes on a frozen lake (mounted to an ATV) I might have used them for, but alas I passed on the job for other reasons.
