IDX Cam-Wave CW-5HD suitable for a live shoot?

Had a call for a live shoot, non broadcast but relayed to a large screen for a show at Excel.

 

They asked for me to be untethered and would I be happy using a Cam-Wave to transmit.

 

I said I couldn't guarantee how stable the signal would be but they seemed happy and said they would just cut away if it dropped out as it is a multicam shoot.

 

Has anyone used the Cam-Wave for this kind of thing? I know it has been done in the past but is it suitable? Would the (short) delay cause issues? If not what else would you recommend? Any other info much appreciated.

 

Camera will likely be a ENG style (HDCAM, XDCAM etc) Sony.

Delay isnt an issue, as its almost not there. I wouldnt use this for live tv work, but i guess that what the need it for would work. make sure to hang the reciever as close to the set as possible and hang it high so the signal has a clear vieuw. It can do around 20 to 30 meter depending of the place your at. indoors it works a little better then outdoors. ( reflections )

Mike,

I've used CW-5HD for live shot in combination with wire triax camera.

You must genlock your signal, if you use new generation production switcher you can use internal frame syncronizer,

for a total 1 frame delay. For low budget production is good.

I agree with Job, Indoors it works better then outdoors.

Just to update for the archives, I did the job on Saturday and the Wevi was absolutely rock solid! We ended up transmitting in SD only which may have helped, I'm not sure.

 

The vision mixer said the the signal didn't drop out once all day (8 hour shoot) and at times I was over 100m plus from the receiver. I only managed to loose the signal by leaving the hall and going out through the thick fire shutters at the back but even then we still got an intermittent picture.

 

I've used the Wevi before for monitoring but was really impressed by how well it worked under pressure and wouldn't hesitate to use it again. Delay wasn't really noticeable.

 

Have any of you guys noticed a difference in reliability between SD and HD?

Firstly I'm the Operations Manager in a hockey arena and not a camera or live broadcast technician by any stretch but I am responsible for our recent upgrade for our video production system. We went from 2 Sony Z1Us and an Edirol V4 switcher to a Broadcast Pix Slate 3000 and added a Sony PMW 350 and a PDW 700 into the inventory. With that we purchased a CW-5HD package with batteries for our 350. The system has been set up for about 3 monthes and has been very solid until our last preseason hockey game last Saturday. We are running HD and on High output and for some reason we are getting green lines flashing on the screen. We knew that in certain areas around the arena we would get sparkle from being out of range but the green lines are brand new. We have the receiver mounted under our centre hung scoreclock and put the ice in a few weeks ago. We still seem to be inside the environmental range but something seems to be glitching. Any advise?

Hi Warren, do you know if there were any other additions other than just the ice? Was there or are there any other types of RF receivers or transmitters also in the vicinity of the receiver? Did the broadcast guys add anything? The banning could sound like a signal contamination.

 

I would hit up Vickii Chaffee over at IDX and let them know whats going on... they are really super friendly and will be the best place to go for answers.

 

Unfortunately, most of us own them, but hardly ever see the image that it transmits. But PLEASE post back what you do find out and how you solved the problem.
