Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted July 30, 2010 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted July 30, 2010 I got called the last week by a DP I know for a one day job on Sunday in that burning hell you call home, ... I quoted him a decent rate and he was OK with that. Hey Doc, does the following email I got from a crew member on the Sunday job sound like the same group who called you? :o :o Robert <<< "Hey Robert,...Was a Varicam job but switched to RED last minute. I spoke with the DP today and he said he was looking for a Steadi Op and of course I recommended you, but he said he had already spoken with you and that you would not come down on your rate. He told me he was shopping around in LA to get an operator at a lower rate. Just wanted to to let you know so that maybe you can talk to your steadicam buds and make sure no one will come out here and undercut your rate. You may even know this, but I figured I would tell you all I knew anyhow just in case. Also, just so you know it sounds like a back breaking, crowded, uncontrolled day around drunken idiots at the hard rock hotel pool. He told me he intended to do the whole day on Steadicam with a few shots on sticks. Sounds like a Cribs job except add 2,000 drunk, drugged, half naked 20 somethings around lots of water, with all day sun exposure. Kind of a Steadicam ops worst nighmare huh!">>>
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted July 30, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 30, 2010 Just make sure you've got your facts straight. On more than one occasion I have had producers lie to me about what someone else was working for. I can only guess that it was some sort of misguided attempt to either get me to try to undercut that rate or to try to get me to work for less in the future. ~Jess
Premium Members Jon Beattie Posted July 30, 2010 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 30, 2010 Been operating for around 2 years. Trying to make it work and not be a scumbag. I've been getting killed this year with people going out for silly rates. I have minimum I won't go below. It makes me crazy getting passed by on job after job for ops giving it away. Still have a long way to go but somethings you learn quick. Standard of rate for the gear is one of them. I'd be happy to go Strong Island on the undercutter.
