Recommended Posts

Hi, i have a problem with HDMI converting to SDI/HDSDI for canon 5DmarkII.

I am easysteady users and developer and i need HDMI to SDI/HDSDI converter for use canon5DmII on easyteady steadycam with HDSDI video cable into sled.

I tried Datavideo & Aja but during REC mode, wich 5D video signal out is in 486i, they doesn't work.

Somebody have a solution?

Somebody have tried Convergent Design converter or Blackmagic on canon 5DmarkII?

Or you have other good produtcs info?

Canon 5DmII during preview & playback has 1080 @ 60i video out (on HDMI)

and during REC mode video out is in 486i (on HDMI)

So seek, it always change format, and i need a fast converter for steady use.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Riccardo.

The 5d does as well. Does the 1d? I'd assume so, just never used it before.

They all do, they just all look terrible. Borderline unusable if you ask me, there really isn't much comparison between the two outputs. I actually own the blackmagic version, but the Aja works better. I swear there was a thread a while back that asked the same question

Ive made a custom light weight "running" rig out of the Glidecam X-10 system specifically for use with the Canon 5D . The post was modified at a machine shop to allow me to run the necessary HDMI cable thru it. I use the smallHD DP-1 monitor taking the HDMI feed with no conversion. The image is pretty spectacular both in the Preview and the Record modes. The monitor does not work well out in sunlight since I believe its only 400 nit. But for inside use on appropriate projects the image is very useful.

Decimator 2 work in the opposite way, from HDSDI to HDMI.

I tried AJA with my 5D but during Rec mode doesn't work.

I think blackmagic work well but with some delay for switch.

Datavideo has a very good quality out during 1080i.

Next week i will test a convergent design, after i will post a report for you.

7D work better with HDMI out, but DOF of 5D is amazing.

5D composite video out is absolutely no good for focus controll and operating well, also using a big good monitor like marshall 8,4'' HDSDI sunbright monitor.

I am a steady factory builder, in our steadycam there is HDSDI 3G video inside, I don't want rebuild cable with HDMI cable only for 5D user.

Looks news X_plates DSLR, also for mount directly into easysteady steadycam or for shoulder mount, do you like it?? for me is important your opinion.

Thank you and cheers everybody, Riccardo.

Who in the world is pulling focus off of a steadicam monitor? I just shot a 3 page walk and talk in the bright sunlight on the 7D with the composite out and had no problems with the image for operating. I could see everything I needed for framing purposes. Since when is SD no good for operating?

Much rather use my superbright monitor than have to use some hdmi monitor that is HD and sharp but becomes unusable as soon as some sunlight hits it.

just sayin.....In the end, whatever works for you to operate well and make for happy DP/director/producer.

Seconded. I use the SD composite out all the time, and my focus pullers never use the monitor to pull focus, like me they'll only use it to see what is in frame if they are looking at it at all. And I've heard others say what Sydney said above, that the HDMI output isn't that much better than the SD, as it is extremely downgraded (as you noted yourself, Riccardo). The HDMI connector is also a consumer thing and not terribly sturdy. I have used it before but had issues with image going out from time to time. I'd rather bypass it all together.

Also, and this is semantics, the 5D DoF is not so much amazing as it is limited. The 7D sensor is about the same size as Super 35mm, meaning to get the same frame you are using the same focal lenghth and getting the same DoF. The 5D has a larger sensor, so shallower DoF, and with the standard lenses and low f-stop your Focus puller won't care what signal and monitor they are using, it'll be just as hard to keep things in focus.

Cell phone cameras have amazing DoF, everything is in focus! Like I said, just semantics.

Best of luck, I'd keep it simple and use the SD composite outputs, but if you find something you really like I'd love to hear the solution. :)

I used 5D and 7D, and 5D has more DOF, sensor of 5D is 2 times biggest the 7D.

5D is better for wideangle lenses with 2.8f stop, you can work in 24mm with 2.8f and changing focus, with 7D lenses are 1.8x and or will don't have same wideangle or you will have no same F stop beacuse lenses for wideangle in 1.8x start from 3.5f, with a lot of problem in lensflare or similar also. I prefer 5D sensor end lenses but 7D for tricks video.

This my opinion. But this out of topic.

Regarding HDMI or SD i wrote my experience:

I use same monitor (marshall 8.4 inch HDSDI sunbright) for steady and for tripod application. In steady mode i use SD signal into composite monitor, and during tripod i use HDMI out from 5D and i enter into monitor in DVI converted from HDMI cable (wich small chip cable converter, about 3,00€). The video quality is better in DVI then SD, there a big difference.

In DVI i can take good focus without focus assist of camera, in SD i need alway to use the focus assist.

Obviously when i work with focus puller assistant there is no same problem.

Tomorrow i will check new FOCUS products.

Cheers.

Riccardo,

Had not thought about the using DVI... my UltraBright2 monitor has a DVI input. with the 5D, do you still have the drop outs and c.10+ second delay while the camera re-communicates (handshakes) with the monitor?

You are right that this is off topic, and I apologize for bringing it up. I was attempting to clarify a common misconception or two, and I did not succeed. Probably my failing, I've been great lately and nt being clear. I'll try once more, but you'll survive just fine if I don't succeed.

the 5D sensor is 1.6x the size of the 7D, not 2x. At least the useable area is, I maybe 2x is correct regarding actual physical dimensions. The 5D does not have more depth of field, if anything it should be referred to as having less. DoF is the range of distance away from the lens that is in acceptable focus. The more that is in focus, the more DoF. DoF varies per lens, not per sensor size. A 25mm lens will always hae the same DoF no matter what camera it is on. The reason we think of the 5D of having LESS DoF is because to get the same frame as a 7D with a 50mm lens, we have to put on an 80mm lens (1.6x). And an 80mm lens has shallower (less) DoF than a 50mm.

I hope that was clear this time. It's hard to wrap your head around when it's explained clearly, so I can imagine it's even harder when I explain it!

You either missed my point, or I missed yours. Are you pulling your own focus most of the time when operating steadicam? If so, bummer, but I understand the issue in that case. And yeah, on a large HD monitor I can imagine the SD output looks like crap. I can't speak for the HDMI output, but you seem to be happy with it, so that's awesome.
