Practice is really important. I was on the course this time last year. Time flies...

How did you finance your rig ? if you don't mind me askin.

I'm sure you'll have heard of Egg Finance? They're pretty good and have quite low rates.

Yeah egg finance, my girlfriend suggested them to me. I have recently found something even better. Business link will offer interest free loans with capted £30 month repayments for the first year. At least 1 good thing to come out of the present goverment.

I financed my rig through .... my wife! She was very generous and bought me the rig outright, thinking whether to put her on eBay and add that as a selling point :

1 wife (ex-demo),

Runs well, low mileage, understands the need for Steadicam, allows late night return (alone only), requires lots of cuddles though - low reserve!

:P

I'm gonna bring my rig along, so anyone who wants can have a try, should have my camera too (old but useful Panasonic F350A & SVHS dockable back).

Under two weeks and counting :D

All my experience is in DV and I'm desperately after experience and knowledge of Digibeta, HD film etc etc... Problem is I'm in a post uni void of nothing but debt and I also live out in the country where very little happens (west berkshire) and the media industry is non-existent.

So, in the meantime i'm saving money to move to the bright lights of london and chase my dream. Mark

Hey mark

What dv cams have you been using ? you will find most cams are pretty much the same from DV DSR 300's right up to digi beta and hd.

I'm thinking that DVCPRO 50 seems to be a good step up from dv. They are the same 4.2.2 color sampling as digi beta and at half the cost. The panasonic AJ-SDX900 looks freaking fantastic, and i've seen them second hand (ex demo) for £9000.click me

One thing however i have noticed from this forum is that you don't need your own cam. just a good rig.

As far as moving to london, good luck. i work quite a bit in london but would never want to live their. I think somewhere like brighton, leeds or manchester is a good bet (not as much competition as well).

Matt,

I've used pretty much the whole sony range of dv cameras, simply because our uni was sponsored by sony. They supplied us with all sorts from pd-100 to dsr-570. I want experience with other formats rather than with the cameras, as i appreciate the majority of cameras are to some extent similar to use. I dunno, i feel as tho i not as attractive to employers if i'm only proficient with one format. I just want to learn! I like the look of that panasonic cam.

As for London, as far as i can see (going by the jobs advertised on Mandy) there are lots more oppourtunities there than anywhere else. Although any major city is going to have more oppourtunities than where i live at the moment.

I do think tho that i would like my own rig first before i go out spending money on cameras. I'm just looking forward to doing this course and then applying it to dv productions - its a start!

Mark
