Skate/Snowboarders Past and Present !

I'm wondering if their are any established steadicam opps that have skateboarded or still do. This is something i have done all my life since 12 years old and plan on doing until i can no more.

As i'm moving into steadicam i would love to make contact with anybody with similar interests, perhaps a collaboration could be on the cards. I have never herd of anybody really using steadicam in this genre unless somebody can enlighten me.

Also does anybody know if the term goofy footed in steadicam terms, actually came from skateboarding. As this has always been the term for somebody who skates right foot forward as i do.

Try to check out "yeah right" by spike jonze for a good introduction to the kinda films i'm making.

be kind (never push mongo).

cheers

matt.

Ok I confess...I'm a closet skateboard enthusiast! Been skating for years and have actually shot quite a bit of the sport for TV. Thing is...now I'm a little paranoid of injuring myself ...so I just cruz on my longboard mostly nowadays.

One of my fav exercises is using the Indo Board...a simple balance trainer which can be seen at www.indoboard.com.

...you should see Matt Marek on that thing after a few pints!

I mostly shoot tv with my rig and will always wear skater shoes to operate unless on rocky/slippery terrain outdoors. I find the skater shoes allow me to grip edges really well not to mention the comfort factor. I've also adopted some names for the way I operate (and notes in my shotlists)...which seem to have a skater nature to them....things like: 1/2 switch...Fakey Reverse....haha yes I have issues.

Thomas....that wobble board looks cool for strengthening all the little muscles from the calves down....is it?

The indo board is actually way cool....although it looks like you can only balance on the one axis, you can actually ollie the board so it changes the angle on the roller. Once you get comfortable on the board with a few little tricks it can be quite a good workout or a good compliment along with running and/or a weight training routine.

Ok...here's a tag question...how many ops out there weight train? My 2 best steadicam exercises in the gym are Deadlifts and Hyperextentions (for the lower back spinal erectors). I can't tell you how much these 2 movements compliment steadicam operation.

I can't skate worth a shiz. I do however snowboard and surf like crazy! I also work out when I have the time. Between work, surf, snow, and chic my schedule is insane. Hey Bryan, where do you live? Lets go snowboarding. That goes for any other ops that surf and snowboard. Give me a ring and we will shred.

Great responses guys, I was a bit scared about posting this msg originaly but it's good to see some other big kids around here. Perhaps that goes hand in hand with being a steadicam opp.

I normaly skate half pipes in the uk as we have plenty of mega parks these days, thanks to all the little bin liners (rollerbladers) that sprang up a few years agos.

When i was younger i must have sprained each ancle about 6 times each, but now their strong as hell, must be all the scare tissue acting as a strengtherner. Or maybe i just got better at jumping off.

Next time i'm plannin a boarding trip i'l post a new thread, wheres good in the states ? i know some good mountains in the french alps.

Hey BJ,

I live in Toronto...where you at dog? I'm actually totally jonesing to get back on a surf board. I've been considering a trip to either Tofino (way too cold there right now) or Hawaii. What are the curls like in SOCAL this time of year?...that would be a cool trip too.

Actually the winter season here is great for surfing and snowboarding. It is no Canada where you guys have some killer boarding, but we have some pretty cool mountains here also. Surfing here in the winter is cold but the waves are much better. I hit up Costa Rica in august and it rocks! There were no crowds and the waves were up. The water was warm so it was board shorts all the way. Let me know if anyone is gonna hit up SO Cal or if anyone wants to surf or snowboard.

I'll be in Mammoth from Dec 26 through the 1st -- anyone doing any snowboarding there over the holiday? I always wanted to learn but was afraid of breaking my ass and being out of work. Usually stick to snow-shoes and bat-wings.

I think goofy-foot was a surfing term?

I always dream of going surfing but in the uk we get 4 foot max waves, unless it's a storm and even then you have to doge all the crap in the sea.

Would anyone hook me up in the states next time i'm working over their ?

I grew up skateboarding and then snowboarding.I shot snow and skate for years and I guess that is how I got into this business.

Anymore I really only surf. I broke my ankle pretty badly about two years ago skating a wood bowl, after surgery I was out of work for about four months. Too scared of wrecking myself again. Too bad I guess that means I am growing up.

I live in Oregon so it is cold in the water but the waves get really good. and five guys out is a crowd. We are the home of dreamland (best concrete park builders in the world) so there are parks everywhere. And the mountains here are pretty damn fun.

If you happen to be in portland look me up.

BJ I also have a place in LA and surf when I am there. I will try to look you up next time I am in town.
