Case Foam Options

I am refoaming my cases and was wondering what types of foam are commonly used and what people recommend. I have seen everything from the really soft open cell foams to really rigid closed cell foams used and am curious on what peoples opinions are about what is best to use. I also don't know what most of them are called if I am looking to buy them so if anyone has any clue that would be great.

 

I am planning on using a hot knife to cut the foam myself at least for the prototypes. If I am not happy with the results I am getting I will let the professionals do it but I like the idea of being able to take the time to get everything laid out exactly how I want it.

If you want to see or get exceptional foam work, go see what Charlie does at Master Case. Beveled, sloped, routed rounded edges. He did my new sled case last year, is building me a new Preston case this week and refoaming my rental walkies kit as well.

 

The only thing they don't do at Master Case is drawers.

 

A&S case in Burbank does great foam too but Charlie takes it to an entirely new level.

I used 1" thick layers of semi stiff foam, I purchased it localy at a place that sells packing materials. An 8Ft x 4ft sheet cut into sheets the size of the Pelican 1650 was $37 out the door, then at home I took the time to cut it, round the corners, and glue it all together. I used 3m Super 77 foam spray from Home Depot to glue it together. And if you go this route, grab plenty of new razor blades. It's amazing how quickly little ole foam dulls razor blades.

Your sled fits in a Pelican 1650? ...You lucky bastard...

 

Also, do you remember the density/name of the foam?

One sled does, and the other doesn't, But I'm working on it!.

 

The foam is 1" thick and I bought it at a company in Miami called EMPACOL if you do a search, They're on NW 51st Street, off 72nd avenue, so it would be something like 71XX NW 51st Street. It's their dark gray hard foam, I don't know what they call it. Works well. and For $37 bucks, plus $10 for the can of Glue and an hour or so with some razor blades, you can't beat it. Next time I have to do it, I'm going to make all the cut outs, then cover it all with that super thin, indoor/outdoor fabric which mimics the old gray carpet folks used to cover home made speaker cabinets with. Should last longer and look slicker, and everyone wants a slick looking case interior. ooohhh Ahhhhhh
