Canon 5D monitor out

Hey Guys i have my first shoot with a 5D and was curious if there was a HDMI to Component cable?

 

I know about the AJA box and similar.

 

 

I found this online for a ps3 and couldn't see why it wouldn't work...?

You need mini HDMI from camera. That output does change from HD to SD when you roll camera so monitor must be able to process that. Most use converter like Black Magic or AJA HDMI to HDSDI.

That's an interesting cable. I don't believe that the cable itself does the conversion, it seems to be a function of the PS3 where it can pass different signals through the HDMI port. One of the comments posted on that link indicates that the PS3 has to be set to the correct type of component output which indicates to me that it is doing the conversion internally. I had never heard of anything other than a digital signal moving through HDMI so this is a bit surprising, but it's one way to cut down on the number of connectors on the side of the box! In any event, I'm quite sure that this wouldn't have any effect if you used it inline with a 5D.

 

The AJA box is not recommended for the 5D incidentally because it has a hard time with the resolution change. The Blackmagic handles it much better. Either can be used for the dual processor Canon models (7D, 1DMKIV).

Ook that makes since. Thanks for the info Charles, i will look into the Blackmagic box. May try to rent one here local, not a big fan of the whole DSLR world... I try to limit any shooting with the 5/7d when im not using the steadicam as it is! B)

After looking at a HDMI pinout diagram and using my 30 years of tech experience, it's my humble opinion that the Sony PS3 would do what you need. It should be nothing more than a breakout cable supplying R G B component video and stereo audio to your TV/monitor.

Sorry, I should have said: Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr. digital component, but I still think it would work for any HD digital monitor that has component input, for $25 I'd take a chance.

 

This is from the PS3 manual setting info:

 

BD / DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)

Set the video output format to use when playing a BD or DVD. Set this option when the system is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable. Adjust the settings as necessary for the TV in use.

 

Automatic - Set to automatically select the best video output format for the TV in use.

RGB - Set to output in RGB.

Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr - Set to output in Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr.

 

The main problem would be the mini to standard adaptor needed in between the camera and the PS3 cable which just makes another flimsy connection in the line. I always go out with at least 4-5 cables on a 5D shoot just to be sure of getting a stable connection.

That's my thoughts for as much as I know, take it for what it's worth.

I just looked at that cable, and it's not an HDMI connection on the end at all. In fact, it plugs into the "AV Multi" port on the back of the PS3. Check out the 2nd picture on Amazon, you can pretty clearly see that the connection has a "U" shape, not the shape of an HDMI connection. And, as far as I know (having just strung a few hundred feet of HDMI cables through walls this summer), HDMI is a digital-only interface, where component over RCAs is an analog-only communication.

 

If only it was always as simple as a cable. I work a ton with the 5D and the 7D doing handheld (shooting a local reality TV show, and a few commercials), and I'd kill for having the old 3 RCAs for component - HDMI is just such a bad interface for production work.

OK you guys are confusing me.

 

Can we agree on the following: the 5D is the output device in question here, not the PS3. Whether or not the PS3 can output component over HDMI or through another connector is immaterial--the option is selectable via the PS3, which is not the case with the 5D, so that cable won't work with the 5D.

 

And to clarify for others: the Canons also have composite video out in standard def via another connector. So you have the choice of HD* or SD output.

 

*drops to SD in record mode with the single processor cameras like the 5D, but available in all modes with the dual processor cameras like the 7D)

I was only commenting on the cable the OP mentioned in his initial post... Specifically, I'm saying that it does not connect to an HDMI port. Rather, it connects to a Sony proprietary PS3 analog HD 1080i port. There is a separate HDMI port on the back of the PS3 just below the analog one in question that of course uses a different cable. so no, the cable the OP linked to is not compatible in any way with a Canon 5D, so don't buy it.

 

I am also a Black Magic user, by the way... I was an Aja guy, but now I hate them as they've become a purveyor of useless Apple peripherals.

Hi guys

 

I just had another closer look at the "not HDMI" proprietary Sony PS3 cable and really read this time, the attached title for the cable and it does say "component AV"..... so please totally disregard anything I said earlier.;)

It's all too easy to see what you expect to see without really thinking it through ..... component over HDMI .... what was I thinking? Every day it's a good thing to learn something new and also be reminded you're not as smart as you think you are!

 

So DON'T BUY THE CABLE!!!:D
