This looks very promsing as a cheaper wireless HD directors monitor....might even perform better than Wei HD or titanHD.....the size and weight are also very attractive....

 

anybody here have any first had "field reports" ?????

The DIT on our show just received the Receiver unit. We'll be testing that this week.

We were using Ipads initially but he delay was about 10 to 15 seconds. A software fix is supposedly in the works.

The Reciever has been promised to be the answer.

I'll report back.

I assume your DIT is referring to the "Cimera" listed on the Teradek website.

The claim is it is down to a 3 frame lag. No cost is available on the website and it isn't linked into the store, from what I can see. Maybe you are supposed to phone in to get it.

No, Ramon, The Chimera is an encoder for the broadcast industry. In addition to the Cube-120 HD-SDI encoder (transmitter) which has been selling for months, we now offer CUBE-320, a H.264 decoder (receiver) with WiFi in and HD-SDI out. It's worth emphasizing that these products are encoders/decoders, not just transmitters/receivers. Because we compress to the industry standard H.264, and stream over TCP/IP, we can do all kinds of cool stuff like record wirelessly to a proxy file (http://www.thevideocube.com/?p=121), stream over the internet, or even to iPads. The iPad SDK still does not allow us to do live video without buffering, but we are trying to find a workaround. In the mean time, the Cube to Cube latency is pretty good, < 100ms. You can easily extend the range with off the shelve Wireless routers, and there are many boosters etc out there if you need to extend the range beyond 300ft. Plus you can mix Laptops and SDI monitors - quite handy I think.

 

We have many steadicam operators that have been using the encoders for months, but they'll have to chime in themselves.

Absolutely, you can mix and match HD-SDI->HDMI or HDMI->HD-SDI, but please note the HDMI decoder is still a few weeks out. You can use a laptop with HDMI in the meantime...

Hello everyone,

I've been using the cube for some time now. I thought I should say something here.

First, I would like to say that the customer support from Teradek has been great. Nicol, Richard, Rod, and all the guys at Teradek always have had the answers and time to help.

On to the Cube. I have a had quite a lot of success with it. Using a standard router I commonly see around 300 feet of range. It will transmit through walls The quality of the video is really good. If your using a laptop you can set up bars and dial in the picture. There are a lot quality options in vlc. (the program used to receive and decode.)

The set up of the cube is easy There are many videos on how to set things up. Once things are configured it's quick to get it going.

Ive recently started to use the receiver/ decoder.

It's a handy little piece of kit.

For those of you who like the transmitter/ receiver method this is the way to go. Ive used it strapped to the back of a 6.5" transflective Marshall as a director's monitor. It's very light, the cube is powered off of the dtap on the back. I'll post a picture when I'm back in LA. I'm in brazil at the moment.

Now to mention the lag, it is there. It's very slight and if you like the other features you will be ok with the slight delay.

Now on to the Red business. The instant dailies are an awesome feature! If ever you wanted to have a look at what you've just shot on an iPad.... I don't know if I have to say anything else... It works as advertised. Basically within a few seconds you are able to playback anywhere on set.

There is a bit of set up for this feature to work but nothing is difficult to do or figure out. I got throughout the process easily. Just so you know I had an average amount of networking knowledge before using this product.

The great thing about this set up is that it works anywhere. If you setup a nice network with a router ( plug it in and join it, pretty easy) you are in good shape. Wifi, although it has its quirks, works.

The guys at Teradek have made networking a simple thing to do....
