Warning GlobalMediaPro Li160A

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased 5 Globalmediapro GMP Li160A batteries.

They where to replace my Phylion AN-2000A (=140A)

I was hoping with the 160A, I had a little more juice.

To my big surprise these batteries where not able to power my steadicam for more than 10 minutes!

I use a steadicam master, wireless thomson with LDK200, transvideo monitor and bartech focus assist. One phylion powered this for around 25 minutes.

My phylion batts kept on warning me (voltage warning in transvideo) upon the 11.7V point where the camera would stop.

The GMP's suddenly die at 12.6 V !!! No warning whatsoever.

They turned out to be completely unreliable.

Also I tried them on an Sony XDHD, same thing. The batts only lasted 5 minutes.

I was lucky to have some AB's from the rental companie as a backup.

Now, I have 5 useless batts.

I hoped to spend less, ended up paying way more!

Hopefully this will help others.

GMP's response:

You use the battery incorrectly.

The maximum power draw for the battery is 79W.

You draw 23W for camera plus 58W for adapter plus 10W for monitor plus lens (?W)

You need at least 100W draw. Even then you come very close to the

limit of on-camera batteries available on the market.

So we recommend you use external power rather than on-camera battery.

For example, Globalmediapro Li422 Lithium ion Battery System 422WH, or

a similar Anton Bauer external power system.

It has nothing to do with Globalmediapro battery quality.

Please use our batteries according to their specifications.

*************

Note that the much smaller Phylions had no problem!!!

I don't see myself running around with a external power cable...

So Anton Bauer Dionic HC, her I come.

Ive had a similar but opposite result with these batteries. (If that makes any sense)

The 160's ran my Boland 8.4 monitor for a day and a half on a recent job. The 95's ran a DigiBeta for 3+ hours on standby.

I have noticed that they do stop suddenly at 12ish volts as well, with very little warning. But for me, its always been after a signifigant amount of time so haven't worried about them. I just know to keep an eye on my voltage readout (my steadyrig base has a meter in it).

The other thing I have noticed is that the fuel gauge on the side of the battery doesn't often reflect the charge in the battery. If I turn the rig off, and take the batt off, the readout on the batteries will often be zero, but according to the voltage meter in my base, they still have 13-14v in them.

Though, this is without pushing them in the way Mark has been. Having a Pro style base that separates the power of components probably suits these batteries more then Marks applications.

So I just keep an eye on them, and they've been fine for me.

Globalmediapro Li160A supports 79W power draw. It is sufficient for almost any modern camera and light. It is not sufficient for Mark's system which draws close to 100W. Our Li230A 230WH battery supports 100W draw.

We provide 1 year (2 years for orders over 20 pcs) battery warranty. As far as I understand Mark's batteries work fine if not overloaded.

Our batteries are protected from overloading. They should shut down if overloaded.

Power (W) and Energy (WH) are two different things. For a battery, Power is SPEED of drawing of the stored Energy. The Power limit (79W) is like a speed limit. You cannot ride it faster.

A battery may have less Energy but higher Power limit. Old cameras and lights used more Power. So older battery designs may offer higher Power limit. There are of course new high Power designs. The maximum Power limit on the market for an on-camera battery is 110W as far as I remember.

Steadicam applications often require higher Power. Please check that Power required for your system does not exceed the Power limit of the battery you plan to purchase.

UPDATE!

After buying Anton Bauer batteries Dionics HC, I've found out my steadicam is leaking power.

Thats why the Global Media Pro's were down so fast!

So, in the end there was nothing wrong with the batteries from GMP.

I'm very sorry for blaming the batts.

My colleague runs a few disks on one GMP battery and is very satisfied.

Having bought AB's, my sled is now a little lighter, but my wallet too...

Sorry guys at GMP, hope this makes it up a little.

Regards, Mark, Netherlands.

I am running my rig on Global Media Pro Li160S (I've got 4 in total)

Two batteries can go for 5-7 hours with a Panasonic HPX2100, Bartech/M-One and Transvideo Titan HD.

And after 2 years of use - they are still working perfectly.

We also got 4x190W GMP for normal camera work, and they have worked perfectly for over 5 years now.

So I don't think there is any problems with them.

Looking to pick up some Global Media Pro batteries. But that wire transfer thing they ask for as payment is a bit odd and suspicious. I'm sure it's fine with all the ops that use them, but can anyone here give some experience to going through the payment process?

Hi Quaid,

In the early days of GMP they had issues with credit card fraud so they simply will not accept them anymore. In the end their system is no different to anywhere else in that you order something, they send you an invoice, you pay the invoice, they ship the order. I've spent tens of thousands with them and never had a problem.

Cheers,

Do you or anyone have any input on their (HW) High Wattage batteries that supposedly are their Anton HC-like comparable batteries for more power hungry cameras.

I'm really in between some Dionic HCXs and Quad 2702 charger or a bunch of aftermarket batteries (which I have had GREAT experiences throughout the years with).

What's your $0.02 on what batteries to use on you sled for independent/ parallel/ and 24v powering to camera and accessories?

Ive got a couple of the 95wa HW GMP batteries. (amongst the nearly 20 GMP batteries I have)

They defs last longer then my non HW ones, but I am yet to figure out if thats because the non HW batts are alot older,

or its a clear difference in the cells in them. Haven't had a test of new HW and new non HW batts next to each other.

I have

4 - LI 230 . . . . 2.5 years old . . . Bought from Global Media Pro online

3 - LI 190s . . . . 5+ years old . . . . Bought from some other company here in the US, don't remember

3 - LI 90s . . . . . 5+ years old . . . . " "

all from China and they have been super strong and have powered everything from Alexa on down.

All of these batteries are manufactured from Beillen a company based in china, then all the other distributers slap their labels on them, at least thats what the company told me at NAB . . . .

http://www.beillen.tv/Gold-Mount-Batteries/Beillen-BL-AN190-Li-ion-battery

I would dispute Globals Claims about your use of the batteries, it sounds like you have a bad batch to me . . . .
