New display technology to watch

A new display technology offering the clarity and viewing angle of CRT with the size, weight and power consumption similar to LCD displays is on the move again. Originally developed by two companies, Pixtech and Candescent Technologies (both now defunct) as FED (Field Emission Display), they are now being developed by Toshiba & Canon as SED (Surface-Conduction Electron-Emitter Display). Basically, it's a CRT with one electron gun per pixel, so no scanning beams or magnets required and a much lower HV required since the gun is immediately behind the phosphor. We monitored this a lot back at CPC because at the time there were no LCD display available that has the viewing angle and sunlight visibility necessary for the job. Now that the Japanese heavyweights are getting into the game maybe we will actually begin seeing this technology develop. If so, bye-bye LCD's.

Ahhhh, reality catches up. I started in Steadicam 18 years ago. My uncle, who shall remain nameless, informed me many many years ago that a client of his developed this technology for the US Government. He wouldn't name the client. He did, however, describe in great detail just what Jim is now sharing.

Long time coming. It will render current displays utterly obsolete. Can't wait to see one on a rig !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim;

My only question is when and where and how much. As they say, A bird in the hand tastes better than one thats dropping poop all over your head............... Errrrrr, ummmm thats not it, but I think you get the idea.... So long LCD technology, but when? One year, two? It takes a long time for a product to go from concept thru beta into factory production, as you all well know.

I guess what I am saying is that none of us should sell off our favourite monitor just yet in anticipation of the newest technology.

I'm as anxious as the next guy to see an even better monitor, but I also know that each and every design will take what seems like eons to those of us impatient souls..... And remember, don't look up at those geese flying overhead.

Next time in NYC, you better hang out with the rest of us!!!!!!!!!!!
