I have been Looking at many showreels over the past weeks.

What would you say are your favorite steadicam showreels and why ?

Just watched Charles Papert's reel, simply brilliant !

plus the dop reel has some of the best looking mini dv shiza i have ever seen.

what say you ?

not much it seems 30-11-04

the reason i post this msg is so that people who have seen a good showreel can post a link and let others know about it. That way people can learn from the masters and perhaps get ideas for their own reels.

That's very nice of you--thanks for the kind words.

Since that DP reel went up I have a bunch more DV footage, having purchased a Mini35 setup and done a series of commercials and short films with it (here's a couple of examples). Also I'm shooting an HD feature right now--that's a whole different experience...

Ah the mini35 looks fantastic from the review's i've herd. Are you using it with an XL2 ?

One problem i have is finding suitable fish eye lenses for my cams, DSR570's or XL2's.

Where can i get these from ? nobody seems to have a clue where they come from in the UK. Are fish eyes easy to get hold of for mini35 ? If so i might have to get an XL2 and mini35 setup. At the moment im using fisheye's from 35mm SLR's.

In the "undecided" after the dialog "i showed this crazy women my boob". Whats the story with that jump cut ?

Although for mini dv i think i'd realy struggle to get anywhere near that quality. How do you do it, just good lighting ? i tend to spend ages in AE befor i'm even slightly happy with my stuff.

"body factory" is bloody funny i realy liked it. Great depth with the mini35 ehy. Who is that lead actor ?

Regards

matt.

Hi TJ: Yes, that's the whole point of the Mini35--retains the DOF of 35mm by rephotographing the aerial image via a ground glass. Thanks for checking out the short. We didn't win that time--I've directed 11 of those weekend films and generally the audience awards hinge on a flash factor of some kind, and this film was a bit low-key as written comparatively. (if anyone wants to check out the other efforts, see www.instantfilms.tv).

4mat:

I have the DVX, haven't stepped up to the XL2 yet. Been shooting an HD feature so I'm off in 2/3" land at the moment.

Regarding "The Undecided"--because of the limited time frame of the shoot, I had to do some slash-and-burn on the coverage for that final scene, and just do a punched-in version--unfortunately that particular moment was not as different in image size as the master, so it had a bit of a jump-cut quality. But I needed to use different takes for performance reasons. I decided to let it play, most people don't seem to mind the jumpiness (it looks better on a larger monitor, for some reason).

I didn't do much color correction to this film. I'd have to agree with you that it's the lighting that usually makes stuff look good.

Incidentally, our own beloved four-wheelin' Ron Baldwin operated this short for me and did a fantastic job, especially with the Steadicam work.

The actor in "Body Factory" is one of our Instant Films regulars, Henry Dittman--just another barely-working and highly talented Los Angeles actors.

If you want to see the film that beat out all from the festival that "Undecided" appeared in, which also featured Dittman, watch "The Swidge" at http://www.instantfilms.com/archive15.html. It was written by James Gunn (writer of the "Scooby-Doo" movies as well as "Dawn of the Dead") and is outrageous.

How do you find your dvx ? i havn't seen anything from them first hand. Really tricky trying to pick out a cam to buy at the mo. I have seen some footage from the sony fx1 from japan that really got me thinking. Looks not far away from some bigger hd cams around 20x's the price. I could pick one up for around £2300 in the uk.

www.instantfilms.tv seems really good, i wounder if their is anything like it in the uk ?
