Premium Members Michael Wilson Posted February 7, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 7, 2011 So I'm having a friend make me a weight plate from scrap metal. I've searched the forums and internet concerning the camera screw hole. I'm having a piece of steel cut to fit on the dovetail. However this piece of steel will likely be over 1/2" thick. I will have him tap a 3/8" and 1/4 20 holes. Where can i find a camera screw to get through the dovetail, weight plate and into the camera? I'm confused about the mounting of this plate. thanks
Premium Members Santiago Yniguez Posted February 8, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 8, 2011 Hey Mike, You won't find a screw that will go through both the dove-tail and steel plate. Unfortunately, you'll need two different types of screws. I dunno if you live here in LA, but if you do, you can always got to film tools and pick up the dove-tail screws. A little expensive but a must have for your kit.....both 3/8-16 and 1/4-20. When you have your friend drill your 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 holes, make sure they are counter sunk so that the bolts head ends up flush with the steel plate. You can find these bolt anywhere....lowes/home depot/local hardware store....etc. So, you'll screw your bolt threw the steel plate and into your camera. Then attach your dove-tail plate to your steel plate. Then your off and runnin. Hope this helps! Santi

Ben Noftzger
I'm getting ready to make a weight plate as well. Could you post some photos of your finished weight plate?
Premium Members Ryan Rodinis Posted July 31, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 31, 2011 I just had one made yesterday. needed 6.5 to 7 lbs. Figured 1/2" thick steel at 5" x 9-10" (0.143 lbs per square inch of 1/2" thick steel). Used the Zephyr Dovetail as a reference for the spacing between the rows of holes. made recessed 1/4-20 holes (unthreaded) and threaded/tapped 3/8-16 holes. Going to further modify it by increasing the number of holes on the center line and anodize it or otherwise finish it in black. the photo below has the dovetail plate loosely attached for transport right after I picked it up.
