Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted March 1, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 Preston has a new miniature motor called DM4. Price is north of 2k. from preston: DM4 Digital Motor The DM4 is a micro-sized motor. It’s made specifically for driving light weight lenses where size and weight are critical, such as Steadicam and 3D rigs. In order to prevent wear and maintain its precision, the motor uses polished metal gears coated with super hard diamond-like-carbon to virtually eliminate wear. The integral motor bracket with an adjustable rosette gear makes it easy to position the motor in tight places. The DM4 is compatible with MDR-2, Digital Micro Force, and the single channel Video Lens Control units. pic DM4 Size (mm) 90x37x22 Weight (g) 250g (complete with bracket) Maximum Speed at output gear 1.8 Rev/sec Output Gear 0.8m Max Torque Output (peak) 1.15Nm Product Number 4206

Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted March 1, 2011 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 Is the motor protocol different in the MDR1 that makes it incompatible? IB to my knowledge it's the same, if it works with the DM1 it works with the DM4
Premium Members Eric Fletcher S.O.C. Posted March 1, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 I've played with it. It's SMALL, REALLY small. but.... it's not the torquiest of motors, you're not going to spin a stiff lens in the cold.

I'm Very aware of what it's intended use is. Doesn't mean that people won't use it as a focus motor
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted March 1, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 The idea of integrated rod mounts has always worried me--seems like there's always some possibility of the motor needing to go where there is no rod, or the necessary real estate is already taken, so then you are stuck using a dogbone and a short rod and all that. Is that just me being superstitious or does this particular design somehow supercede that? Cute little guy though.
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted March 1, 2011 Moderators Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 Charles, I had the same thought as you, but I suppose this motor is meant to be placed in your "bag of tricks" and does not need to be as universal as your others????? I wonder how it compares to the small Heden (which also has built in mounting brackets but may be some of the most flexible of its kind). Eric, you've tried the Heden, right? Thoughts? Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted March 1, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 1, 2011 I have the same concerns about a built in bracket -- I never had issues with my heden m28, but it wasn't as convenient as the pam bracketry on the dm1/dm2. I'd love to see a side by side between this motor and the new small heden. For a comparison: dm1 with a pam bracket is 1.2 lbs. dm4 is .55 lbs heden m28vp is .7 lbs m26ve is .5 m21ve ? Premium Members Jerry Hill Posted September 14, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 14, 2013 I have an adapter for the DM-4 motor! It will interface with my Pam bracket set-up. Then you will be able to adjust it up and down. Hill Products, www.steadimoves.com
Premium Members Thomas English Posted September 14, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 14, 2013 The new mini Heden is meant to be as powerful as the large Heden. Certainly I've been using hedens for years on my MDR1 but rentely purchased a DM2 . The mini heden definitely still comes out of the box of tricks in awkward situations most notably in the AR - Omega rings. Hedens are definitely more flexible but I do love the DM2.
