Premium Members Mike Germond SOC Posted March 2, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 2, 2011 I got 2. First from 'Jordan Brown' when the 'from' address clearly said 'James Brown'. The second one was from his twin brother 'James' who must be sharing notes with 'Jordan' because his message was verbatim. Anyone with a brain can find out my contact info and what city I'm in via google. That was the first clue. Closely followed was the 'states of the federation' comment. Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted March 2, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 2, 2011 I got two separate ones... One for camera operating and one for Steadicam operating...so maybe more than one site or bbs was hacked...
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted March 2, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 2, 2011 I may reply with this: Dear Mr. James Brown, Thank you for contacting me! I'd like to Get on the Good Foot and say the job sounds pretty Out of Sight. I would love to hear more about the project, as I'm Bewildered by the prospect and working with you, well, That's My Desire. I Got the Feelin', call it this Cold Sweat, or Call It Stormy Monday, but can you share with me the location of this shoot now? I mean, Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens, and Think (About It), For Once In My Life I Got You (I Feel Good) about this opportunity. Work has been slow lately, and I gotta Get Up Offa That Thing. I Don't Mind negotiating terms with you directly, after all, we're both Living in America. It's Magic! Anyway, Try Me and I'm sure you'll Get On the Good Foot. Of course, email is no way to conduct this, and if I booked all of my jobs over the internet, well, What Kind of Fool Am I? Speak with you soon! Best Regards, Mother Popcorn Steadicam Owner/Operator
Premium Members Paul Gardner Posted March 3, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 3, 2011 Will, You should ABSOLUTELY send that reply under some phantom identity. I was feeling all dejected and left out, cuz I didn't get the spam! Then, Today I was browsing my spam folder before emptying it and, sure enough....there it was! So really...what is the object of this message? Would it be the Nigerian Inheritance scam where the guy sends you a check for double the amount of promised wages, and has you send send him back the difference and BAM...the check bounces after 2 weeks, Or is it simply to find out our addresses and raid our garages? I'm thinking the easiest place from which to compile all of our email addresses is the SOA website. Just curious, did anyone get the spam who is NOT an SOA member? Not a guild member? It's a shame, because we want people to find us to hire us, but not James Brown....
Scott Coleman
I got it too. Wanted me to give them ALL of my info LOL
Premium Members Dave Kanehann SOC Posted March 3, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 3, 2011 I stay pretty low profile on the net, but to date I have gotten 6 from James and Jordan Brown. It looks as if they got the list from the SOA site.
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted March 3, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 3, 2011 This is definitely from the SOA site as it was sent to the email that I use only for that. No hacking required as our emails are very easily scraped from the site. I am actually surprised that it took this long for something like this to happen. I don't really see it as a problem with the site though. It is just a good reminder that you should have some sort of disposable email address system for such sites. If you own your own domain you can set it up as a catch all so that any address@your domain will go to you meaning you can easily make up new ones for everything. Then if you start getting spam at one you know where it came from and can easily filter it. Another way of doing this is to use myemail+site@domain. With most email setups your email will go to myemail@domain but you can use the +site to identify and filter it. ~Jess
Kevin
Anybody else out there been getting ridiculous spam emails these last couple of days from "James Brown" looking for an op and a need to disclose an "exact location"? It's very similar in tone/style to those Nigerian bank scams. Wow....just saw your post...and yes.... just posted about it. never heard of this before...obviously !! :)
