Premium Members Andy Johnson Posted March 17, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 17, 2011 Hey guys, I've been flying a red for a couple of jobs but I have to get to the bottom of this. The 2x 12v AUX 4pin Lemos on the back of the body don't want to give enough juice to power accessories, I got a reading of only 3.75V. I spoke to some hire houses in the UK who assure me that they have powered accessories via these but I think they are getting confused and blagging it to say they work but the power is coming from the AB P-Taps. Anyway I spoke to RED Europe, helpful guys and I'm going to reset all the settings to see if I can get 12V to appear on this camera. Summing up it mostly says: do not use those power outlets. Instead have a p-Tap connector ready for the items you want to power and use that from the battery plate Red provides for the camera. I guess the outlets are not meant for drawing higher currents and since you probably not want to use the outlet for powering audio devices chances are you draw too much and damage the circuits of the camera. As Markus said if you are using a wireless FF, with a powerful motor you are going to be using substantial amounts of current, also what batteries are you currently running on your rig? Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted March 23, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 23, 2011 As a Steadicam operator working with increasingly more digital cameras I think it is necessary to read the manuals and specs from the cameras you are about to use.... Red clearly states that these accessory ports only handle a max of 1,5A each, which you quickly overload with many accessories.... When you measure only 3.75 volts, you already blew that electronic fuse, most likely. Result is that the camera has to be send back to Red.com, have a powerboard replaced @ $600 + 2 hours of work @ 100$ + shipping back and forth.... It's because of them that we now quickly transfer into Digital 35mm. Yes, Panavision was before them, but at such a price that it was not a real game changer at that time, mainly because of costs and associated issues with data and workflow.. On the other hand, Red's designs are not completely thought out from the beginning and this is one of the weak points.... Still, my opinion is that if I as a steadicam operator connects anything to any camera, be it a SR2 or a Sony-whatever-cam, I need to know if the connection might cause problems.
