TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

I'm DP a small feature, using Sony DSR 500's. Our Steadicam operator is using a Modulous 3000, but it is causing a red goasting of the image when transmitting. This is being recorded on tape. Solutions anyone? We have hard wired the video feed, which has eliminated the problem, but then the operator is tethered.

have you tried putting the transmitter somewhere else on the rig? by the monitor, at the bottom of the rig as far away from the camera as possible.

1) Transmitter as far away as possible from the camera/recorder

 

1a) Check the grounding on all wires!! a bad shield can act as antenna.

 

2) Reduce the power output on the antenna (-6dB or more)

 

3) give the transmitter its own battery/power supply: sometimes the RF is radiated into the power cords, specially when all appliances are on one power supply.

 

4) use a different channel

 

5) use a different transmitter :( GigaHertz transmitters give less interference, but are not usable with normal TV´s

Tom Schnaidt here. I was your focus puller on that Redge Mahaffey movie out in Md a few years ago. I hope you are well.

 

Your problem is very interesting to me, as I am a DSR 500 owner too. It is probably obvious that the transmitter is causing your problem if it doesnt occur when the Transmitter is not on the camera, however, I just got my camera back from a very expensive repair where we had red ghosting in the image as well, and I have never flown that camera on my rig, or used it with a Transmitter. In the end it was a lot of video mumbo jumbo about some capacitors in the optical block... Probably has no bearing on your problem, or......maybe?

Try another Modulus transmitter. They can vary a lot from unit to unit, especially depending on the abuse they've received over the years. Also put the 6db pad onto the antenna output and pick up a longer whip antenna that is more specific to the frequency on which you are transmitting. Wolf Seeburg sells these for $50 each. The combination of pad and longer antenna weakens the output of the transmitter while taking the specific frequency you do want and strengthening it. Offers much better results and substantially less interference.

 

I baby my Modulus and it has never affected the signal recorded to tape on any camera. But I have heard of this problem from others. Not all Modulus 3000 transmitters are equal.
