3D using just one Phantom 65 camera body

Just did a couple of days using the Phantom 65 and these bitching Russian lenses which put 2 simultaneous images on the sensor to create 3D.

The results were phenomenal, and the whole rig was not much heavier than an Arri 16 SR3 package, (never got the exact weight).

It's only available at Abel CineTech. Look for it the demo footage we shot of the Dana Fuchs Band with this system, (and the system itself), at the Able Cinetech booth at NAB!

Cool!

I help create a prototype phantom65 single camera 3D system a few years ago (with abel help!)

Very cool that someone else picked up the idea!

Post more pictures and info in the 3D steadicam thread.

Pentax used to make 3D adapter for their still cameras that was just a series of mirrors to position both eyes on one frame. Think i also saw an old russian system that used a similar concept once. Hope the idea catches on before 3D sends some of us to an early grave.

these configurations usually have a fixed IO. Convergence can be made to be adjusted but complicates the system. You are much better off adjusting convergence in post or if your broadcasting with the Sony MPE200.

But since you have to slice and dice the frame before it goes anywhere kinda makes this system no usable for live broadcast since it has to go thru a post process. In fact these systems usually introduce alot of distortion that also has to be corrected before viewing.....so it's definatly more of a feature tool.

While it might seam like an elegant way to solve the problem these single lens/single camera solutions all have a multitude of issues and limitations.

Which is why after all the prototype systems i have used we always go back to using a beam splitter for real critical work.

Convergence was pulled by an assistant watching the screen in 3D while shooting. Focus was pulled from the same controller, which was fun for everyone involved, I'm sure. They really should separate the convergence remote unit from the remote focus unit which are both dedicated units with this system.

It was a lot of fun overall.

as far as i know they are using cmotion Cvolution to control the focus/convergence....with that system you have have up to 4 handsets! talking to the same camin/controller box/mdr

More than likely they only had one controller!

...plus I'm partially to most of the time just setting convergence and not pulling it.....YMMV.

Hello from Russia.

It's my first post in this forum. Last year I had job with Phantom 3D. My opinion is very simple. This system is very light, it's very good. But I see two shots in my monitor, it is worse. My experience 3D is very simple too - stable horizon and a stable distance.

Look at some technical pictures from this project:

I think is good idea (symbiosis of the American camera and Russian lenses as the СОЮЗ-APOLLO,is less global only).

This is a not a simple question. I think it is a right image better for me too. But... If i have a distance about 1-2 meters, a difference between the left and right images is more, and I have a compromise composition... I want a 3D control! The glasses may be...

Sorry for my emotional comment.
