Premium Members James Davis Posted April 22, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 Anyone heard anything about a new camwave or something along those lines? Was looking at buying a camwave, however recent significant reductions on websites such as creative video have made me suspicious that the current model is about to be replaced or updated. Has anyone here heard rumours or know of anything on that's due out in the next few months before I drop some cash?
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 22, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 I heard that Boxx is coming out with a smaller xmitter -- I think it will have fewer features but still really nice. I would still love to see a side-by-side of the boxx vs the transvideo if it ever makes it over here.

The new Boxx transmitter was about the size of a cigaret pack... they put one on the Tango in the Tiffen booth during the start of NAB... although it had issues transmitting that short distant, they assured that the unit was working flawlessly and that it was possible the signal coming from the CineDeck. The receiver was hidden behind a 7 or 8 inch monitor built into a small pelican case complete with external HDMI port and mount for batteries (Sony NP style) If they work out the bugs, it could be a must have unit. Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted April 22, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 I've been on the fence about buying a CamWave or looking for a used one. I saw the Boxx at NAB and it is clearly more robust in many ways but also almost 3x the price. I'm sure I could pay for a CamWave with rentals quickly here in Las Vegas but the Boxx I'm not so sure about. Robert
Premium Members James Davis Posted April 22, 2011 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 Yeah I use a marrell half the time, very much old school, quality of the camwave seems to trump it hands down, but the marrell is tiny and nice and reliable too. I hear nothing but good things about the boxx......but the price....well, I think I have to concur with Robert, I can't see it being something that would pay for itself within any reasonable time frame. Most are happy with the marrell, but people are starting to ask for HD here and there, and I think it would certainly impress the clients a little more, as the picture out of the marrell isn't amazing by any stretch. Have any of you guys used the Terradek cube yet? Apart from the delay (which I heard has been improved upon) are there any real downsides to using it, I haven't heard any bad things about it....yet. The camwave seems like the only reasonably priced option out there right now, the boxx would interest me if the newer version came out at least somewhere close to the pricing of the camwave. How about the Transvideo Titan, didn't they say there were bringing out a smaller version of the HD one, that was supposed to be half decent....again though I don't know anyone over here who has been using it, it seems most guys here use marrells and camwaves, or the Navtech. Thanks for the responses guys.
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 22, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 I got my boxx system used for about the price of a camewave...they pop up from time to time. Once the newer one comes out there will be more available too. I have never had good luck with a camwave. So far the boxx works extremely well and has had few issues that couldn't be solved with a quick channel change.

Premium Members Brant S. Fagan SOC Posted April 22, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 Love my Boxx Meridian system!! Could buy it away from my for twice the price! Nothing compares to the performance! Not cheap, but then the best is always worth it. Just ask your current Director or DP.
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted April 22, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 Boxx just announced at NAB their smaller transmitter that works with their receiver called the Atom. 2 antennas as opposed to the Boxx Meridian's 4. Looked lIke a decent unit at NAB, potentially limited in range though but probably still 50-100 feet @ 1080p. I think the price was $6,000? J-LABS also had a model that wasnt functioning, but they were estimated for $8,000. Built on the newer generation AMIMON chips that allow for some huge range (which the newest rev of the Meridian uses).
Moderators Louis Puli SOC Posted April 22, 2011 Moderators Report Share Posted April 22, 2011 Love my Boxx Meridian system!! Could buy it away from my for twice the price! Nothing compares to the performance! Not cheap, but then the best is always worth it. Just ask your current Director or DP. I would have to agree with Brant and Ron performance is everything . Not having the Director or DP say "How was it we lost picture" is worth every cent . I give the pm a choice between my modulus and the Boxx HD and the price and I find (working mostly on commercials ) they go for the Boxx every time and I charge accordingly (double my Modulus price) aroung the 25 days and it payed for itself. As for the size well it is larger then any other system I have been use to but with V-locks (in most cases) just snap it on the camera and go. Good luck Louis Puli
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted April 23, 2011 Moderators Report Share Posted April 23, 2011 Don't own any of them yet. Our show rented two Boxxes. They were great (besides going through several hundred dollars in antennae throughout the season - yes, really). Our DP from day one said "no" to the Camwave as he thinks they suck so the rental house bought the Boxxes. I saw no way to make more money with it this time around (Bean counters back in LA were already freaking out about my gear rental so I wasn't about to get any more money no matter what I added to my inventory). Premium Members Thomas English Posted April 23, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2011 The boxx Atom seems like the way to go soon. That Transvideo TitaN LT seems to not be on the horizon so I think I'll be going boxx atom as soon as its released. The newer Camwaves definately seem to be getting better than earlier ones.... Premium Members William Demeritt Posted April 23, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2011 The newer Camwaves I think use the latest revision of the AMIMON chips, but they still use a PCB antenna, so the transmission integrity could be improves. The new Meridian uses 4 external rubber duck antennas to increase broadcast capabilities (plus a receiver antenna). What will really push the boundaries is whoever introduces power amplifiers to the antennas.
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 23, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 23, 2011 I thought I heard from Mr Papert that soon tbere will be a smaller, more portable array available for the current boxx receivers to really increase the range.
