Premium Members Kyle Fasanella Posted May 20, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 20, 2011 Hey guys, I am looking to build a modification to my travel skateboard so that I can attach a baggage carrier handle to it with Kipp adjustable handles or something else which is tools free. I like this attachment to not require any changes to the skateboard so it is still useable as a skateboard when I need it to get around. I have considered a few designs which require the skateboard to have slots or something which would hinder its abilities as a skateboard. I think it be best to attach vis the sides since the handles will be larger than the board itself. The skateboard has no tail so it could be positioned for a 45% tilt from the ground when making sharp turns. My main client requires me to travel a bit and this be a great way to get my gear and luggage around without requiring an entire baggage carrier and skateboard. This is far beyond any engineering I have ever done. I need help trying to figure out - what kind of Adjustable handles I would need - what kind of clam would grip the sides of the wood skateboard deck - How to get those clamps - anything else I am missing/might not get/. Here are some design drawings and pictures of baggage carriers to help clarify what I am trying to do. thanks for all your help guys! Premium Members Afton Grant Posted May 20, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 20, 2011 Well, despite your extremely descriptive engineering diagrams, I don't at all understand what you're trying to do here. For transport around set, the carts available do the job very nicely. For transport around an airport....well, you really only need to get from the curb to the check in counter. Any airport will have a luggage cart. They work great.
Premium Members Kyle Fasanella Posted May 20, 2011 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted May 20, 2011 Ha, Yes sorry for the lack of descriptive diagrams. I would just buy one of the carts shown here but I really want to reduce the amount of stuff I carry around. So I really like to only have to carry around the handle part of the carriers. Rather than the handle and the bottom with wheels. Plus keeping my weight below 50LB for two bags can be challenging already. Often I need it for more than the airport. Many times I have to travel quite a while with my gear to the shoot location since it is not assessable by car.
robert weldoff
hi no offense but i think u are way over complicating things as Afton says carts are pretty useful for what they are designerd for as well as baggage carts at airports something u could try is a folding nose trolley http://glandapan.en.made-in-china.com/ im sure u can find these things in the US i had a small lightweight one for carting boxes from my groundfloor apartment to my car, http://glandapan.en.made-in-china.com/product/QoYmOwSlbGDH/China-Foldable-Trolley-Z06E-STEEL-.html worked like a charm, also folded up to about the size of a box of grapes and i could carry all my boxes in one go also was quite cheap, but not so great on rough terrain. Moderators Janice Arthur Posted May 21, 2011 Moderators Report Share Posted May 21, 2011 Kyle; I understand what you are trying to do. You want to clamp a handle to your skateboard and use it as the base for hauling your gear around the airport etc. You don't want to wreck the skateboard in the process either. Welcome to inventing. You're going to have to figure out a way to adapt a premade handle on some cart to your skateboard. Here is the reality. 1) whatever you do is ultimately going to cost more than just buying a simple cart. 2) A skateboard, may not have the right wheel configuration to be best for this job. That's what inventing is for, to figure that out. 3)If I was you and had only one case to transport, I'd just balance on the top of the skate board, attach with bunge and push it that way. Not ideal but it works and simple and cheap. Good luck and enjoy the fun of searching website and hardware stores for the parts to try it. Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted May 24, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 24, 2011 I would imagine that a mafer clamp and extendable painters pole might be a good place to start... As Janice said, have fun!
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted May 24, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 24, 2011 A simpler solution may be a case with wheels. I refoamed my sled case a little while back to fit most of my accessories. It has wheels so when traveling I use a strap to hang my battery/accessory case from it, set my stand on top of it and carry my vest and arm in a backpack and I am able to move it all around in one go. -Jess
