Torben Greve
I'm having a hard time deciding what kind of base plate to get for the Steadicam Pilot. I'll be flying the 5D with a Hocus Focus and therefore need some rod support. What alternatives do I have beyond the Zacuto mini base and microSupport system? I don't need anything fancy, although it would be nice to have a stable quick release option. Thanks
Premium Members Joe Lawry Posted June 29, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 29, 2011 I'm using the zacuto universal plate for any 5D jobs. dont bother with the mini. Buy the big one, the extra weight is handy as as the extra room on the back of the plate. You can mount your HoFo RX on there.
Torben Greve
I was just suggested this one from another steadi guy... http://www.shoot35.com/products/rodsupport/af100baseplate/af100baseplateframe.html Quite a bit cheaper, but still looks decent. I could just add the 6 inch extentions to it and have 16 inches for the price $260 instead. Only thing I'm unsure off is wether the height between the base and the rods is too high. Premium Members Joe Lawry Posted July 3, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 3, 2011 Yea that'd do the job, although it doesn't give you as much mounting placement when it comes to the camera on the actual plate. Because SLR glass is so short you'll want the 5D right at the front on any plate you buy or else you won't be able to get the motor in the right spot to engage. Attached is a picture of a quick and dirty 5D shoot i did awhile back with my Flyer Le, 5D, 21mm ZF and the Zacuto Plate, you'll also see I have a manfrotto QR plate between the zacuto plate and the camera body. Its not the great QR but it does the job, the Really Right Stuff plates are better. No motor on there as they didnt have a budget for a 1st.. and 21mm on full frame stopped down is fine.. kinda.
