CVolution or the ARRI WRS

Hey yall

I believe this is my first post, but I have been gleaning a lot of information from other contributors and I really value yalls input, especially when there is sometimes no other avenue for information.

My company is in the process of purchasing a wireless follow focus unit. I have used a variety and have found the Cmotion and CVolution to be the most reliable and usable for our application. While I am pushing to purchase the CVolution (specific items listed below), others in the company are gunning for the ARRI WRS. There is little to no information on the ARRI WRS other than the ARRI website and theyre impossible to find in Los Angeles, whether to demo or rent.

The ARRI sems to pretty much be working off of the technology built by CMotion. The engineer who built up CMotion apparently used to be the ARRI engineer then branched off, there was bad blood, and now ARRI is back in with him, which explains ARRI's new partnership with CMotion.

The CVolution seems ever expandable and pretty much the only device present in the 3D world, compatible with many camera systems and motors, and will soon be adopting ARRIs White standard.

To my knowledge the ARRI WRS is mostly proprietary (eg the WRS only works with ARRI motors) and while its modular, its not very fitted for the future.

Does anyone have any information on the ARRI WRS? Id be purchasing the WCU-3, UMC-3A, 3xCLM-3, ZMU-3 and a bundle of cables, etc.

For the CVolution Im interested in Camin 4M, hand unit, cvolution zoom, 3xM21, advanced knob, and cables.

Does the ARRI draw more power than the CVolution? The Preston whipped through my batteries on the Archer 2 as itd only function in 24v mode. I want to make sure Im not getting into the same mess with the ARRI.

And lastly will the Archer 2 power the ARRI UMC-3A through the 3-pin lemo on the front of the stage as it does the CVolution? I know that this is a question of cables, but again, theres just no info out there on the ARRI. The Sales rep said it would be at least a month before theyve got any to demo.

Thanks for any help yall have.

I'm not an expert on those systems but it seems to me the ARRI WRS is built to only work with Arri while the C-Motion is made to work with most cameras. And I believe it will talk to the Alexa Plus directly without a motor driver. Seems more practical than the Arri system. Plus expandable for 3D work.

I spent alot of money on my CMotion Cvolution (8motor Camin for 3D)

I've made my money back and use it on my 2D jobs.....so far I've had ZERO problems.

I absolutely LOVE all the features, the LCD screen built in.....and for 3D it is FAR ahead of all the competition.

Cmotion is working with Element technica and it is sending metadata to their metadata controller....

When you pair the cvolution with the cfinder or the cdisplay it becomes even more powerful.

I cannot say enough....about how much I love it.

All the AC's that have used my system love the large focus knob too...

I would NOT compare it to the ARRI......for me it's easy decision.

Cmotion.

In fact I'm getting ready to purchase a second system.

Hi Brett, I own the new Arri WCU3 system and I power it from both the 4 pin LEMO off my RED ONE MX and the 3 pin SLED LEMO.

Note that I have had the current draw of the arri system checked at LEMAC in Sydney, and it was just on 1 amp when pulling focus on MKIII super speed. If you are using older lenses the the current draw will be higher and can blow the fuse on the RED. I have a D-Tap to 3pin lemo cable made.

BTW I really like the Arri system and I have had it for only a few months and all the focus pullers that have used it so far have been really happy also.

I bought mine from Mitch Gross at Abel Cine, he was the cheapest by far.

I have not used the Cvolution.

I have done a film where the Arri system was used. Compared to the Preston the Arri wireless was clumsy and prone to failure. I don't think many assistants who are used to working with a Preston would accept the Arri WRC for long.
