Zephyr or Glidecam X-22

Hi there,

a friend, who's teacher in a college, was asking me which one of these two sleds I would buy for a workshop, whether Zephyr or Glidecam X-22?

I think that the Zephyr is more acurate production (personal view), but he needs it only for teach and practise with their students...

what would you do?

Bernat

If I were a student. I would appreciate being taught and trained on something of high quality.

That seems like it would prepare me best for what I might run across in the field.

If it were between those two options and up to me, I would buy the Zephyr.

Me too, but depends on the budget they can afford for it, which I'm not sure at this moment of the amount they can spend...

thanks a lot, more opinions are well received

The weight carrying range of the Zephyr and the Glidecam are similar (Zephyr seems to be slightly higher). The Zephyr is about $1500 more than the Glidecam, but is generally considered to be very superior in design, engineering and performance.

Tiffen has good European service and support through a UK office. Don't know about Glidecam.

If the cost must be kept down, you should be able to get a Steadicam Scout for the same or slightly less than the Glidecam. It's top weight is slightly less than the Glidecam but has most of the same design advantages as the Zephyr.

As a Glidecam X-22 owner-operator, I can definitively say GO WITH THE ZEPHYR. The prices and the weight ranges are even (although the glidecam is cheaper on BH Photo), but the Zephyr is a better quality rig. I love my Glidecam, but if the Zephyr had come out 6 months earlier I would have bought it without a doubt.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER buy a GLIDECAM.... P O S 100% first and absolutely foremost ... glidecam doesnt allow the gimbal to be moved... you will never achieve dynamic balance with a glidecam and if you do i feel bad for how much time that must have taken... STEADICAM is the one and only rig... not only that the Zepher is one of the latest redisigns. the x-22 is just a crappy knock off of their other crappy rig the Smooth Shooter...

lets put it this way... comparing the 2 rigs is like saying a ferarri and a ford taurus are equally the same because theyre both cars...

which one are you gonna drive.

Hmmmm a bit harsh there Kelso imo + get the facts correct!

The X-22 is a midrange rig and cannot be compared with the Smooth-shooter. The gimbal can move up and down just like any serious rig can.

The stage is a nice design only the base is simple + there is only 1 SDI cable in the post and no power cables. Thats makes it a basic rig.

However the arm performance is superb.. it is smooth as butter and is really the most beautiful part of the rig in total. The vest is not really good, the Zephyr Vest will win here for sure.

However, before the Zephyr came out.. in the 20 - 25lbs range the X-22 was/is a nice buy for sure!!!

Just my 2 cents,

Erik

Kelso, sorry but I have to correct your wron statement. X-22 sled does have a no-tools gimbal like it's big brother, Gold and X-25. And it is not that hard to make dynamic balance. Also it is not a copy of Smooth Shooter. It is more like their discontinued V-25. However, it doesn't have multiple power and video connectors, including HD like Zephyr. For that reason alone, I think Zephyr is a better system and Tiffen did a good job on this.

I don't have a neither system, I own a PRO 2 sled and GIldecam Gold sled. And trust me, I won't trade my GC Gold (Ford?) with Zephyr (Ferrari really?).

Also there's another post about this topic a year ago.
