Atoms Samurai will allegedly have all of this, and use SSD or HDD's, and cost $1495 without the 128gb SSD included (worth $200). Or, the Hyper Deck Shuttle costs $345 for uncompressed. Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted August 10, 2011 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 10, 2011 Probably not a good backup monitor, but here are some positives as an HD outboard recorder: 1/4-20 mount. compact size Light weight (12 ounces including SSD drive) Easy-access buttons and controls Confidence/playback monitor easily powered from the sled Cross converter/passthrough built in (HDMI and SDI outputs both hot regardless of input source) auto-records with camera start Pro-rez offers a decent quality/runtime tradeoff, allowing use of smaller SSD drives Atomos is cheaper but its an either-or choice of HDMI-only or SDI-only models. Nanoflash uses a codec preferred by many, but lacks a monitor and is more expensive. Sound Devices Pix240 is about the same features for about the same price (though appears more rugged, with a superior audio section). Am I missing something that would be a deal-breaker as a high-quality recorder for reviewing takes/capturing demo material? Anyone actually played with this unit? People who'd rather use a PC? I know they say other codecs will be supported in the future, but I'm fed up with Final Cut/Apple. This coming from a guy who owns 4 Macs, 2 iPods and an iPad. Supporting only ProRes means that those who don't want to use a Mac have to jump through hoops to use this codec in their workflow. Apple has made it a habit of late to not work well with others, and I hope it's sooner rather than later when it bites them in the ass. Andrew Stone Posted August 10, 2011 Report Share Posted August 10, 2011 If you are interested in a 10 bit recorder that you can use for both capturing your footage and potentially using/renting to production, you may wish to wait for the Sound Devices, Pix 240, unit. In the same price range, has Sound Devices legendary mic preamps in it and it records both ProRes and potentially more important the AVID codec, DNxHD. It's coming out in September so it hasn't been field tested yet however Sound Devices has an unassailable reputation for their portable field mixers. Many (most) sound guys use them. The Pix 240 has a bunch of workflow advantages that many of the other recorders don't have which is spelled out on the product page. I'm using the NanoFlash right now. The Cinedeck is the only recorder, that I know of, which allows you to install your codec of choice on it. Last time I checked the Cinedeck was in the 10 to 12 grand range. The Hyperdeck Shuttle to me at this point is a curiosity. Until there are some serious field reports on it, I'm not going near it, despite it being cheap. There will be a lot of setup and custom cabling required for the Hyperdeck unit and I am not convinced the SSDs will be usable for very long due to fragmentation issues. In order to record uncompressed video the SSD on the Hyperdeck Shuttle will have to perform near 100% efficiency to work. Probably that's a fair assessment...it does a (theoretically) neat job of converting between HDMI and HD-SDI for the cost of other converters, and if the recorder works too, well that's great. The Pix 240 definitely looks like a winner. I just checked and it claims the same cross-conversion between HDMI and HD-SDI. If the weight is reasonable it looks good. The Avid codec is/will be an extra-cost option. 5" hi-res screen is good. The FAN scares me a little, but they claim it's quiet, and they are sound guys, so... Ummmmmm, gotta say there is a ton of misconceptions and just plain wrong info going on with the Hyperdeck Shuttle. There is ZERO setup, slap some velcro on it and you're done, custom cables? Pfftt available trhu severe sources or built your own, You have no frag issues with the SSD since you reformat it every time you download from it (or you should) A decent SSD doesn't have to operate at "near 100% efficiency to work" What's so hard about that? Any issues?? Any pitfalls?? Would appreciate your feedback. Looks like I could quite easily glue a v-lock mount to it and clip it into the back of my monitor, how robust is at dealing with vibration and general on set use??
