I stumbled on a making-of video for the Rascal Flatts "Easy" music video. Don't know who the operator is, but he's sporting a Klassen harness an and AR. Lots of face time in the making-of video. Kudos for the nice work in the video. Who is the operator?

Like with 98% of anything like this I see shot on an AR, there is nothing in that video that couldn't have been done better on a regular rig.

Hi Mark. I was the op on that job. The usual beating:16 hrs,incredible heat, ridiculous schedule with an Alexa for the majority of the day. It was still fun.

 

Richard, Don't drink the Hateraid! The AR's extended post was perfect for getting above head height when I need to, then back to eye height. It has its usefulness.

Looks like they had you on fairly long lenses a lot of the time, too.

But you must be able to see my point. When everything is cut up, there was no real evidence of AR use. The eye line to above eye line can be done with an am post for sure. Also noticed some vibration on the longer lens stuff, not your fault of course.

 

No hatred, or disrespect, just my view on the AR.

Truth of the matter Rick is that the mojority of the jobs I get with my AR are simply for the speed of reset. High, Low, Mid mode or big developing shots doesn't really matter. The thing that gets me jobs over others is the fact that there isn't a crew standing around while I reset the rig. It was what the cage was originally designed for and that is still it's great adavantage. All politics aside, it's use in big developing shots is only an added bonus, not it's sole purpose.

Richard I do understand what you are saying. Much of what we do ends up on the cutting room floor wether it be steadicam, technocrane, AR or whatever. Martins point is the biggest advantage of the AR from productions point of view. Unless you have a specific shot the travels from low to high mode or needs to fly over an object you rarely see a shot of any duration from an AR. As far as narratives go standard steadi still rules: Smaller, lighhter, more maneuverable.

Mark I was on a 75mm for the majority of the portrait shots. We started on the 7D and ended up on the Alexa.

It was a tough one.
