Shooting 26 pin multicore cable tethered.

So I've been hired to shoot a live to tape show and the camera the company has are all 26- pin Sonys. I've tried convincing them to let me go wireless but they want to be able to paint the cameras to match and all of the coms are run through the camera. Do they make a skinny multicore cable like they do for triax and fiber or am I stuck using the ungodly thick standard cable? If they make a cable with 26 connectors in it, I can probably solder two connectors onto it. (Someone was throwing out a broken cable and I grabbed the connectors off before the got rid of it) Thanks :)

yea, as much as I would hate to turn down the work, flying a multi pin cable is STUPID. It will hamper your ability and sometimes it's better NOT to do a gig like that than take a chance of hurting your rep because of flying a monster thick cable like that. Best of luck

If they are using multicore, the chances of them finding budget for broadcast-grade wireless seem nil. Maybe at least they can subrent a triax or fiber camera (I don't really know the engineering issues of routing it into a switcher, but surely they could figure something out). At least then you could maybe borrow a jumper and they could still have paint control...

I wouldn't do a Multicore job, but Triax and Fiber cable are all common types of jobs for Steadicam live work. Not everyone does Wireless.

They can rent a camera head with a Triax or Fiber cable, and the receiver to connect into the truck so they can paint the camera. Ask to speak with the engineer that will work the job. Also, ask them to put you in contact with the previous steadicam op they have used with the 26 pin. If they say it's never been done by them, Explain your an operator, not a test pilot.

Good luck on that one.

The budget is slim to none so I doubt they'd rent a head. I think I might have convinced them to just paint all of the other cameras to me and then let me go wireless.

Wireless for this would cost more than renting another Triax/Fiber body. Doing the job will only make you look bad. When anyone sees the work, they will think the steadicam operator is bad, not that the equipment was the blame. Take the advice and don't do the job.

David,

I second what the other ops are saying. Just say no if you economically can. It will be near impossible to keep a steady shot with a multi-pin cable hanging off of the camera, no matter how well you tether it. This will only make you look bad, regardless if they believe you or not, and you won't be happy with your own results. It's better to tell them no than to struggle to try to get a few usable shots. Tell them you, and they, would be better off if you shot hand-held. Good luck either way.
