Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted January 27, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 27, 2012 Ron, Alan is right about Terry's price. If you can get the Epic connector in small quantities, that is a recent development, I believe. I own cables from Terry, and they are flawless. I've also gotten some cables from Chris at East Coast Cables. Great work. Doesn't list an Epic connector on his website, so it may be worth a call. I've had to wait a little longer for my cables from Chris (not an unreasonable amount of time, just not the overnight service that Terry is so rightly famous for!). Premium Members Patrick Cecilian Posted March 22, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 22, 2012 (edited) epic pin out. Maybe this will help you. Have fun with the Zephyr! Edited March 22, 2012 by Patrick Cecilian
Premium Members Cameron Baird Posted January 10, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 10, 2013 What cables are you guys using for video output from the Epic to the sled? Id still like to use the Red monitor on top for camera controls.
Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted January 10, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 10, 2013 Hi I fly a ZEPHYR as well, you can output SDI to your monitor in clean output, keep the red monitor on top with all the info the DP will need and ask for (make sure he doesn't get the habit of tilting it around though, it unbalances your sled) I use a custom cable to power the Epic off the sled, but the single battery is a bit weak for that along the monitor and the Bartech... (People here recommend to add a battery on the back of the Epic, for balancing reasons as well) Good luck and enjoy your new small big rig! John Kopec
Hey Mark, I too own a Zephyr and would like to purchase the 2nd battery mount. Do you know the serial number and could recommend a website/dealer? Edited January 10, 2013 by John Kopec
Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted January 11, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 11, 2013 You can mount a second battery? Are you sure the wiring in the sled can handle it?
Mark Baluk
Ya, it can take a second battery, and it can do 12v or 24v. There is a price list on the zephyr page on tiffen.com but I am not sure if its listed. it might be the "Battery Mount (smll dovetail)" item listed. Premium Members John Stout Posted January 11, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 11, 2013 Greetings, Terry ROCKS!! We just bought a Zephyr as well. We wanted to standardize our power for the Pilot we own and the Zephyr. Terry has worked out a JBOX that we will be able to use on both the Pilot and Zephyr. It allows us to use V-Mount batteries across the board. The breakout box will be able to power 3 items, plus our Paralinx Arrow. We liked it so much we bought one for our Red Rock DSLR rig just to keep things standardized. We looked at other power options and even off the shelf items were more expensive than Terry's well made custom solution. Can't say enough good about him. Premium Members John Stout Posted January 12, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 12, 2013 We should get them next week. I will post pictures when we receive them.
Premium Members Mark Schlicher Posted January 12, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 12, 2013 Tiffen's second battery hanger is useful for adding extra weight down below when flying heavier cameras. It definitely is a useful option for adding extra capacity if opting to power the Epic off the sled. There are some limitations which have been discussed to death in other threads. A custom power cable would need to be built. I will be very curious to see Terry's j-box.
Premium Members Alan Rencher Posted January 13, 2013 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted January 13, 2013 The second battery hanger is a must for flying fully loaded Epics, or anything that nears the weight limit of the Zephyr. When I bought the second battery hanger, I originally called Tiffen directly, but they said that buying from a distributor would save about 10%. I ended up calling Abel Cine. They didn't have the part is stock, but I gave them the part number. They immediately called Tiffen to get the part, and I basically met Dan from Tiffen at Abel to get the Battery hanger. So basically, Abel has the part number now, and it should be relatively painless to order one from there. What cables are you guys using for video output from the Epic to the sled? Id still like to use the Red monitor on top for camera controls. As victor said, just leave the Red Touch monitor on top of the camera. Don't try to leave the controls to the RedMote (it's janky as hell.) We should get them next week. I will post pictures when we receive them. I'm also curious about the J-Box; more importantly, I might pick Terry's brain on what he has found to be the load that the Zephyr's wiring can handle.
Premium Members John Stout Posted January 18, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 18, 2013 As promised, Terry delivered on the J Boxes. Here is the photo of the J Box. This one has a Pilot end on it, but the others that he made have a Lemo connector for attaching to the Zephyr. Each of the boxes has three 12v 3 pin Lemo connectors and one 2 pin lemo 5v. This allows us to power camera, Blackmagic converter, Paralinx Arrow transmitter and still have an extra connection for future use. Could be used for follow focus, or other accessories. He also modified some battery emulators for our Panasonic HPX-170s and Canon 5Ds so that they have a Lemo end and can be powered off the J Box.
