WHDI monitoring solution

Hey everyone,

I've been working on a wireless monitoring solution using a new WHDI stick from Philips. It uses a HDMI dongle powered via usb. I've cobbled together a unit that puts out both HDMI and HD-SDI simultaneously. It's a bit convoluted at the moment, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to get some interest to condense the whole thing. I'll have more info on it as I develop and test it, but I'll put a couple of pictures up for the moment.

I won't be working on this for awhile because this particular unit started going crazy. I've sent it in for an exchange at Amazon, but they're back-ordered until the end of next month. I don't know if I've played any part in the unit dying, or if it's a fluke. I guess I'll find out when the replacement comes in.

HDMI 1.3 or 1.4?

1.3

Hey Alan,

tried any range tests yet?...BTW, whats the P-tap to usb power adapter you're using?

Here are some more pictures

This is something I made from a Griffin USB car adapter and a car power extension cable. I just cut the end off of the extension cable, and I soldered a P-tap onto it.

Hi Alan,

Which cameras have you tested this with so far?

So far I've only had a chance to test it with the F3, and it worked very well.

I'd be interested in putting the reviver on one of those inexpensive liliput monitors. It would be a great director's monitor if the range is any good (Give it to the director, tell him to go away) I know everyone is asking about range, but what's the longest you gone with it? I only need about 30ft LOS.

Edit: The price is right on Amazon.

I'll be using it on some sets this month, so we'll see. I'll be bringing it without saying that I'm bringing it, so if it doesn't work it's no big deal. I've found though that my pelican case enclosure kills the signal, so I'm modifying it so that it can hang open on a c-stand. We'll see. The advertised range is 23 feet obstructed, by the way.

Okay, so I haven't updated this in a while, but I have been working on a second prototype. I've scratched the receiver box to video village, and I've decided to go with a handheld director's monitor. I'm shooting a short film next weekend, and I'm going to test drive it there. I've already started to build the prototype, and I'll have it up and running a a couple of days.

I've taken a couple of pictures of the build so far: WHIDI Director's Monitor

looks really interesting. I tried to do a similar thing with the director's monitor with the Brite View system that has been discussed here, but ran into issues as the camera was outputting a PSF signal, which neither the transmitter nor monitor liked....

Any thoughts on that? I have done a bit of research and it seems that HDMI in general does not like PSF.
