Premium Members richard bellon Posted February 8, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 8, 2012 Hi All i was wondering about what cameras guys out there are using mostly? i mean in the last week i did 3 jobs all on Alexa and some gigs next week also probably on Alexa the last time i used a 435 was 14mnths ago. do u guys think RED is gonna fade away cause here the rental companies have halved their rates on MX my good friend who has been a focus puller for 25 yrs says he hasnt shot on film in a year. do u guys think its just flavour of month or gonna be around for some time? Jarrett Morgan Posted February 8, 2012 Report Share Posted February 8, 2012 I think the Alexa is incredibly popular for good reason. The fact that people have continued to shoot on it even with the advent of the Epic is very telling. The Alexa took the place of the Red One (essentially, I know it is more complex than that), and I am sure that RED and RED enthusiasts were hoping that the Epic would take over the Alexa. Since that hasn't happened, I think the Alexa is here to stay (or at least versions of it eventually). The last commercial I was on chose to shoot on Alexa even though it was high speed (120fps vs Epic's 300 fps). After seeing the footage, the DP and Director are sold. A lot of 3D seems to be Epic but most 2D Alexa. Have not seen a 435 in years. Very little film as well (two years ago I was still 90% 35mm). We'll see how much the Sony F65 takes off. ARRI was smart to not play the megapixel arms race and focus of the image. It shows IMHO. Just this last weekend I DP'd a music video, almost used an F65 but was changed to Alexa last min. I'm very happy we did as the F65 would of added to much complexity to the shoot. Just watched all the dailies with the director yesterday and everyone is just so pleased with the images we got with the alexa. There is just something so hard to explain about the alexa image characteristic....feels less digital than RED... then again that can all change in post. not to mention it's just way more ergonomical and practical of a camera than the epic. Shooting epic can be like shooting dslr.... Well....3D.....is dominated by epic. The alexa M is a nice try but not really competition for epic in 3D land. Bollywood!! Alexa is a sweet lady. I like the F65 a lot, but I think Sony has created some tough problems for themselves with this powering situation (108 watts for body and SR-R4 deck). We'll see how everyone can deal with it. Richard: to address your question: camera company makes a damn good camera that works with their camera accessories. No NEED for 3rd party accessories to make the dynamite go boom. They listened to the 3 people who care the most about the HD camera: DP, operator and editor/post production. That makes for a hell of a lasting impression. Sony F65 sounds like they talked to DP and Editor, but not operator. Canon listened to shooters, but disregarded editors and DP's (what latitude? Premium Members Matt Petrosky Posted February 8, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 8, 2012 Funny, I've been almost all film since September, including an anamorphic feature and 435/235 commercials and stuff, including time-lapse, and then some Arricam stuff. I do like the Alexa though, and agree that Arri just figured out how to make the images feel more filmic; the Alexa user interface and ergonomics are also really intuitive and user-friendly. However we used an Arri 535 recently on a Japanese commercial for Suntory.. The DP was trained on the Scorpio head and he could do figure 8's blindfolded.. I have yet to work digital on an Indian film. It has all been film. The 2 jobs we went digital on in recent times were both with American DP's Declan Quinn on "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" with the Alexa and now Jack Green on "The Letters" with the Panavision Genesis. 95% of my work is still on film.
