Premium Members Andrew Ansnick Posted March 7, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 7, 2012 I just had a Red One MX on my sled today, no flicker/sync issues what so ever with my Cinetronic. Do you have the most up to date firmware on your monitors (Jens & Will)?

Do you have the most up to date firmware on your monitors (Jens & Will)? I had it updated a few months ago. What software version are you running? Premium Members Andrew Ansnick Posted March 10, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 10, 2012 Jens would be running the same software version as I am, I don't think any new one has been released in the last few months. Is it possible that this is a RED One firmware issue? Perhaps if the camera is running an old/buggy firmware (as we all know RED tends to release these) that could be the root of the problem. I didn't happen to catch what version the camera that I was using had installed.
Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted March 10, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 10, 2012 Jens, Did you ever take the monitor over to Chris and let him check it out? What did he say? Robert
Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted March 11, 2012 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 11, 2012 update: I have spent 2 days now with Greg Bubb and Chris Bangma trying to figure out what's going on. Here's the latest. When feeding a composite signal from the Ultimate into the Cinetronic the screen graphics overlay for the sled and PDL are causing the back-light on the Cinetronic to dimm down about 30-40%. We think it has to do with the level of brightness of the graphic. The sled menu & PDL have multiple settings for the brightness. Low,Mid,High & Max. At Mid the value of the white is 100% or 0.7V of the the video signal. If you set it higher than Mid, let's say High (150%) or even Max (200%) the Cinetronic monitor compresses (limits) the overall value of the brightness of the image. To avoid that, set the on screen /PDL brightness to Mid or Low. I have yet to test if that happens with very bright images in general without any kind of graphics overlay. I will do this next. As far as I can tell this is a analog (composite) signal problem only and HD-SDI should not be affected. if somebody else with Ultimate/Cinetronic setup wants to test and confirm this, please do so. Premium Members chris bangma Posted March 11, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 11, 2012 We tested Jens sled today, and found the on screen level output from the XCS sled in high and max to greatly exceed the NTSC standard. The output on max was double the max voltage for NTSC, and the high setting was 50% too high. It is recommended to run the PDL on screen display at the mid or low settings, since these are the only 2 settings which are within NTSC spec. Premium Members Andrew Ansnick Posted March 11, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 11, 2012 Glad to hear you guys found out what was causing Jens' issue. Will, any updates about your flicker problems? I just flew another RED One MX today without any flicker issue running Build 31 (v31.6.16) firmware. Premium Members William Demeritt Posted March 11, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 11, 2012 Andrew: my problem has persisted for a long time, and has followed me from the SD sled to my current HD sled, different batteries, different power cables, etc. I haven't flown a RED MX lately, I'll report back once I do. I've got an Epic job next weekend.
Premium Members Alex Kornreich Posted March 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 21, 2012 Andrew: my problem has persisted for a long time, and has followed me from the SD sled to my current HD sled, different batteries, different power cables, etc. I haven't flown a RED MX lately, I'll report back once I do. I've got an Epic job next weekend. I've done the exact same thing Will, tried new batteries, cables, bnc connectors, etc. I've had this flickering problem in HD with the Red MX as long as I've had the cinetronic, which I received in August '11. The power cycling does not work with the MX, so I need to go SD anytime I use that camera. The flickering occurs with the Epic and Alexa, but based on the advice of Eric Fletcher on how to power cycle the monitor, this seems to always solve the issue. Chris has been great in trying to help me by switching out many of the monitor components with new ones, but the issue still persists. I'm just hoping the new housing and software solve the issue when they come out.. When functioning properly, it's a fantastic monitor. I'll report back once I've tested my reclocking distribution amplifier on my next shoot, maybe that'll solve the problem? Alex, do you have the 4:3 or the 16:9 monitor? I too have very high hopes for the upgrade.

Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted March 23, 2012 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 23, 2012 "I too have very high hopes for the upgrade. " the new version, will indeed be almost entirely new, since you will only carry-over the display itself. it has a proprietary controller board and software, a new dc-dc converter, connectors, housing and will be modular, so that you will be able to upgrade let's say the display to a better one once available.... looking forward to it.... Premium Members Jens Dittmar Posted August 27, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted August 27, 2013 Hi there, is anybody experienced with the RED EPIC and the CINETRONIC 1st GEN? Do they come together? With the X it was no problem, but the EPIC is progressiv. Some monitors have a problem with that! Thank you...
